Planning MY OWN route?

Which sat nav allows me to program it with a route designed by myself using somekind of mapping software like google earth. The idea is to program a tour route on the laptop, and then program that route into a sat nav?
Doe's this type of function even have a name? Obviously I have no knowledge of sat navs.

Had a play with tyre, but it did not work very well with my TT9something, which is getting on a bit now. I know tyre also only works with a few of the older Garmins.

If you have a tom tom use this to make an itinary for it.

Basically, go to google maps. Do the route you want to do by dragging the blue line around then when you are happy you click the 'Link' which is in the top right next to 'print' and 'send'
Copy the URL and paste it into the box on houghi then submit quesry. A box pops up and you save the ITN file to your computer.

I'll admit, i've never used it as i dont have a stand alone tom tom - mines on my iphone. Maybe it would be just as well to do a short test run before setting off on your trip!
ETA. I believe Tom tom allows up to a maximum 48 different points for a route. You may need to split the trip into 3 or 4 journeys.

echoed, i reckon TYRE is just about teh best freebie program of any nature that i've used. Works seamlessly with my 2 TT's - which are older version - 5 series and 9 series.
In our car club we encourage guys to get a sat nav device that will allow ITN planning or a variation as it makes driving in groups so much easier - teh default device happens to be TT, most of us have them and no ones has every mentioned probs interfacing to TYRE. ....unless their version doesnt support ITN planning of course!
there are still new versions which have it as a feature.
