Garmin Nuvi Lifetime Update... Not updating

Any ideas? I have a lifetime update but I am being referred to Garmin (impossible on a Saturday evening!) as my 660 is not updating.
I have updated the software online (the unit is registered) but still no good.
In passing has anyone else found that a 660 that once had enough memory for all of Europe, now needs maps to be installed piecemeal? I drive to Switzerland a couple of times a year, for the Nuvi to help I need to delete UK maps and install Switzerland en route (& vice-versa on the return) - a real ballache.

It tells you how to download and use Garmin MapInstall, a program which allows you to create an additional customised mapset for your 660. The screenshots refer to the Land of the Crimplene Lardarses and are for an early version of MapInstall, but the process is generic.
I had the same problem with my 660 no longer having sufficient memory space for the latest City Navigator NT Europe mapping; after several laborious e-mail exchanges with a somewhat inept 'customer service advisor' at Garmin, who seemed to have difficulty understanding my questions, I worked out what to do.
First, let the normal nuMaps Lifetime download process proceed. When it tells you that you haven't got enough space on your unit, select a single region (e.g. UK and Ireland) but choose the 'Install to Device and Computer' option. That will save ALL the European mapping to your PC, but just the single region to your 660.
You then have to decide whether to create a custom map set to fit into your available storage space, or simply download the whole European mapset to a 4Gb SD card. The card will ONLY unlock if it recognises that it's plugged into the same GPS as the single mapset you've already downloaded, incidentally.
If you take the 'customised map' option, it will take a while longer as you need to be careful when clicking on the map sections you wish to add. After a while it's easy to get the hang of it and you can change your mind as you go, if necessary. A progress bar helpfully lets you know how much space you've got left. Also you will have to use a PC-to-GPS USB cable rather than transferring from C-drive direct to an SD card in your PC's SD card socket, so the transfer rate will be slower. But once you've decided on your customised mapping, tell the PC to start transferring and go for a cuppa....or two.
Garmin could - and should - have produced some clearer instructions for this process. But of course they'd far sooner you bought a new GPS with larger internal memory....
