Housekeeping on my Garmin Nuvi 1340
Discussion
I've been doing a bit of poking about on my Garmin Nuvi 1340 with a view to upgrading the map without having to use an SD card. This came about after finding that my 2Gb card is no longer big enough for the updated maps, and a 4Gb would fit the bill. This was when I found out my daughter (no pics) had laid claim to the only 4Gb card in the house that fitted my Nuvi (micro SD). I only have a 2Gb to use. The old map fitted on this, just. The new one won't. I plugged the Satnav into the PC to see how much room I had on the internal memory. Only 800 Mg free, but if I took out the original map of 1.3Gb , I might be able to fit the new map in the main memory. A simple case of copying out gmapprom.img to PC disk and renaming gmapsupp.img to gmapprom.img and copying that to the Nuvi.
While these thought processes were milling around my wine fuelled brain, I suddenly thought about Disk Defragmentation. I hit the mouse and keyboard keys on my Satnav drive window to see what would happen. It has gone from 800Mb free to 2.99 Gb free and is still running. It is taking it's time, but it looks like the Satnav memory was highly fragmented which would explain how slowly it boots up, and quite frankly is a probable cause of most Satnav problems if this experience of mine is common. Defrag just finished, took 40 minutes.
Now shows 643 Mb used, 2.99 Mb free.
Now to find a new map.
