Garmin Nuvi 50 - not accepting charge in car

Apologies if already done to death somewhere but not found anything on search...
New Nuvi 50 bought specifically for trip to CLM last weekend, died for want of juice early cross country in (very) rural France. Was plugged into (functioning) fag lighter socket so assumed lead u/s. Managed to acquire another which worked initially but then died in the same manner. Then acquired a third party lead, which did (eventually) recharge the device although it would not function whilst charging. Once charged, it seemed to boot up ok again on the Garmin leads... do I just return to vendor as a piece of junk or am I doing something daft?
