Tomtom in the US - as good as Hertz Neverlost?

When we travel to the US, we always rent from Hertz, and often have their Neverlost nav. I am not certain, but I think it might be a Garmin device. Next year we're planning another trip, and the class of car we're booking doesn't have a Neverlost option. It may be different once we actually get to the depot though. Thinking ahead, I was wondering how good the Tomtom maps are, as my sister has a Start 25 that we could borrow, and then purchase the US & Canada map.
We find Neverlost particularly useful for finding restaurant chains, Walmarts, petrol stations etc. Having never owned a sat nav, I was wondering if this sort of detail is standard across all devices? Is there a point of interest guide for Tomtom listed anywhere?

Not quite the same granted but I took my TomTom One with me to Canada on Honeymoon. Purchased the Canada map here in England loaded it onto an SD card, which was handy as I could use my UK one to get to the airport switch cards and use immediately in Canada.
As for ease of use it was great, we picked the hire car up from the airport after a 8 hour flight plugged in TomTom, put in the Zip Code for the hotel took us straight there and even in rush hour traffic Vancouver it was easy.
As for Poi I am afraid we didn't use that feature as we knew where going, although I possibly used it to find a Gas station and it worked brilliantly.
Basically I found it great on our trip it navigated from Vancouver to Calgary, found all our hotels straight away, infact I think it was more accurate than here at home so I would say to for it.
ETA: after re-reading your post I can say that all the TomTom I have personally owned and used have a Poi function.

Cheers, the Start 25 was purchased less than a year ago, so I'm sure it'll be fine to use with the correct map. This appears to be £55 direct from Tomtom.
The other option we have is to drop in Best Buy on arrival and buy the equivalent with the right map for $100.
If I get confirmation that the POIs are any good, I've then got some options...

Neverlost is pretty good, but no better than any commercial Satnav IMHO, probably uses the same map data anyway as there only two main global suppliers of map data.
We just got back from two weeks in the US and I bought a Garmin for $120 from Walmart with Free Lifetime map updates. It had all the POIs we needed, Hotels, Gas Stations, Restaurants etc.

Always hated Hertz NeverFound.....& when we were heading for a big US family trek last summer, it was going to add $190 to the hire costs (19 days). Ended up getting a new TomTom 550XL from Walmart with the lifetime maps (only valid for US maps) and it worked an absolute treat !
I do head over there about once a year with work, so was able to get it before the hols and 'preplan' the stops. Highly recommended to minimise holiday stress & maximise pleasure ;-)

Interesting 
We're going later this year and I've just downloaded NavFree for the phone. I also have CoPilot which is fresh and will allow one map to be installed FoC.
Does anyone have experience of these apps in comparison with a TomTom? I have one but buying more maps just for two weeks goes against my Yorkshire roots
