Renault Scenic 2004 radio help!

I have a 54 plate Renault Scenic. I have an error within the radio unit meaning it will not accept the radio security code leaving it inoperable. Main dealer quoted over £500 to supply a brand new radio unit and have to flash the cars system to get rid of the error.
Basically I want to know if I bought an aftermarket radio and installed it would that work instead? The main dealer said it wouldnt but I want a second opinion.

I don't know your vehicles set-up but -
There is nothing to stop anyone wiring a bought off the shelf car radio to any vehicle
In your case you will need to find all the speaker wiring and get it to where you are going to fit the off shelf radio, now once you know what pair of cables power what speakers and have marked them LH Front, RH Front, LH Rear and RH Rear plus marked any others your vehicle may have, you can easily connect the speakers to the new radio
The only other wires you will need are the ones to power the radio and the electric aerial if your vehicle has one
To power the radio you will need - 1 x Earth (Ground) cable - 1 x Permanent Fused Live (Power) cable and 1 x Auxiliary Power cable (This is the aux supply cable from the ignition switch that is live when the key is turned to its first position)
Now if you do have a electric aerial - Find the cable that switches the aerial on (Not the permanent supply at the aerial), connect this aerial cable to the aerial switched output that can be found in one of the plugs at the back of your new radio
There is also a possibility that your new radio will need a sidelights on supply wire to illuminate it but not all radios need this
Do make sure to have your original radio disconnected before carrying out the above
The only other thing that could prevent any of the above being possible is if the original radio being removed prevents the vehicle electronics from working, this would only be done as a security mechanism by the manufacturer and I doubt your vehicle will have this system but it will be worth your while finding out before starting the job
