Which aftermarket alarm?

How about something like the Autowatch Ghost.Very popular with the owners of anything desirable to thieves and is reasonably priced.
System is deactivated via certain presses of existing buttons within the vehicle i.e. on the steering wheel or via your mobile phone,so I don't know whether the tech in your vehicle is compatible...
Failing that, have a look at Clifford and their Blackjax system and combine with a couple of trackers and a full steering wheel disclock and pedal box (lots available on eBay).
...Just read early defender,so Autowatch is probably not an option

I have just had a modern Clifford fitted to my old 911, replacing a 20 year old Clifford. I'm sure a determined thief could bypass it eventually, but it is added peace of mind. My old Clifford only had one fob and was looking a little worse for 20 years wear so I was worried it would fail and leave me stranded one day.
It cost £325 all in for a mobile auto electrician to fit it in my workshop. He did a terrific job.

I've had a couple of Cliffords and they have been OK (although the one on my Saab is not working properly after 12 years - no sound although the immobiliser still works. They are only as good as the fitter.
Had a Meta immobiliser fitted to my TVR by Carl Baker which is good.
If I was getting one done now I think I would be looking into one with some kind of pager. Forget the crooklok, if you are going to bother with a steering wheel lock, disklok is the only one. Cheap eBay GSM tracker that sends you a text, immobiliser, etc. None of these will stop somebody lifting it and trailering it away, so the tracker is a deffo, and maybe some kind of ground anchor?

As above, I'd go with some sort of physical deterrent - maybe one of these as long as it's not a complete faff to use?

You can get a clutch lock out valve for a Defender. Once locked, you can press the clutch, but it doesn't come back, so you've got no gears. Much easier than big lumps of metal attached to things. I've also got a battery key, so as long as that isn't in the car, it's very hard to spin the starter.
