For those of us without Sat-Nav installed...
Discussion
Don't get me wrong, I wish my car had come with Sat-Nav installed, but as it was used when I purchased, I had no control over the factory options. I've used different phones, a number of apps, but for me, having something installed is just so much better. That and the fact the iPhone battery takes a hammering when using any app, let alone one for navigation.
I opted for the Garmin DriveSmart 61 LMT-S, which came in just under £200. I also used the correct Brodit mounts for the vehicle and the device. Some messing around with wiring and the removal of the heater vent plastics behind, this is the end result:

I'm very happy with the end result, and with it looking like I'm keeping the car for a while yet, it's the best (and best looking) option available to me at the moment

Regarding what you said about the battery taking a hammering - I had that problem too in the car, even with the phone plugged in, all that this did was slow down the rate the battery ran down.
Changed to an Anker QuickCharge 3 cigarette lighter adaptor, and even with Waze and Bluetooth music streaming, plus the screen lit up, it'll still charge up from dead in under 2 hours.
Obviously this is a bit too late for you, and it's a much less slick looking install than what you've got going, but for anyone else reading this, spend the £20 on a decent cable and a decent cigarette lighter to USB thing (and throw away the cheap £2 ones you've possibly had from ebay - like me!)
