I am looking at an Apple Play Pioneer double din head unit for my son for Christmas and while I am at I would like to replace the standard speakers.

He has a 2010 Polo. I assume that there are some half decent speakers that can be bought that are a direct replacement for the standard ones. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I am avoiding amps and a sub etc as I would rather he didn't have a mobile disco :-)

Depends how much you want to spend. They are 6.5" so plenty of choice, but you will need a fitting adaptor

Kenwood, Pioneer, JBL all make decent stuff

Forget the Jap brands for speakers, look at Hertz or Audison for a much better listening experience for similar costs! Hertz start from about £60 new (Hertz UNO) and Audison from £110.

Try and buy them from one of the Four Masters Independent specialists and you get a 3 year warranty on them too!

Audison Prima APK165 would be a better option to be honest, especially without an additional amplifier, as they are a lot more sensitive.

They are about £10 than the MBQ ones shown but well worth it.

Most vw’s of that age have them mounted in the door. You will have to modify the fitting to get them in, but most people glue them in place. If you don’t have a tweeter position, go for the APX165 from Audison as these are the coaxial speaker with the built in tweeter.

They use a V come technology to disperse the audio towards the vehicle occupants, so the coax will work just as well as a pair of separate components!

Once mounted (and sealed around properly), use a test tone (1kHz works ok for general stuff) to find out where the HU amp starts clipping, and tell him never ever to turn the volume above that, or he will quickly kill his nice new, sensitive, speakers.
