Hi all, need some help and direction please.

As my local ICE place has now gone online only it's hard to go look and get some advice so turning to PH

Looking for some 6x9 speakers and a amp to power them, i know some say these are not the best but with the space i have and the car they are going in (MK2 Escort) they look period, well sort of, a set of goodmans out of the kays catalog would be more period biglaugh

Looking at the quality end rather than the budget end something like this

https://caraudiosecurity.com/power-t1693-6x9-3-way...

Any advice welcome

This place has some very good quality Hollywood Sounds 6*9 speakers for a very good price...

https://audiovisualworld.co.uk/hollywood-sound-hsl...

These are what you would call new-old stock speakers, they were from the early 2000s and they have bought a job lot of them and are clearing them. The £59 original price is incorrect, they were considerably more.

The grilles are also very plain and boring.

Equally as good as the Rockfords in terms of sound and will take more power.

Are you planning on having speakers in the front also or just stock location?

I'd look at fitting 6x9 components, with the tweeters discreetly mounted up front by the dash/a-pillar.

Then use a HU/DSP with time alignment to blend the sound together.

Many thanks Matt’s car, just ordered 2 sets of them,
At that price they are worth a punt, shipping was expensive at £20 though!

Tek> not much room up front at all, looking to fit some 6” coaxial in the kick panels to be powered by the head unit, but this will require some cutting and welding to the lower A post .

i do have some nice 6.5” JL from a previous failed install, but these don’t come with any grills, need to see if i can find some to fit.

For SQ, you'd be much better off fitting some nice 6/6.5" comps up front and a little sub in the boot (or under a seat). The tweeters you can literally stick to the dash/A-pillar etc with double sided tape.

No problem, let me know how you get on with them. You will be very surprised at the build quality and size when you get them.

As others have said, ideally you want sound from the front of the car, but If all you want is "sound" that plays clear and loud, then they will be fine.

Agree with this apart from the sub in the boot part. Would you install a home cinema 5.1 system in your lounge and put the sub in the cupboard under the stairs?

Putting 6x9s on the parcel shelf really screws up the phase and frequency response as it is bouncing the sound off a combination of highly reflective rear window and highly absorbent roof lining. Send the same stereo signal to speakers more than 1 metre from each other (front and rear) can cause phase cancellation.

So just use front speakers and an under seat sub.

Fortunately sub frequencies are non-directional, so you can place a sub anywhere. You just need to make sure it's big enough hehe

Unless you have a boot that is sealed in a saloon car/coupe...then you need to think about porting through ski hatches, rear speakers holes and infinite baffle.

However, with a hatchback/estate you don't have such problems and like you say bass is omnidirectional.

Thanks all for the advice

Sadly the company that MattsCar recommended have come back with them being NLA, they did offer some JVC ones saying they were the same quality but TBH they looked crap.

I understand that fitting some "better" speakers up front would be best, but there is Zero room, it's a 1976 Ford Escort MK2 fitted with a Cosworth YB Engine. The A post is skinny, there in no room under the dash at all, what little room there is is taken up with new wiring and the ECU, pedal box and power steering, No room left for speakers and no room for crossover boxes.

The only way i can get anything in the front is in the kick panels, but then that is going to require holes cut in the lower A post and welding back in some dog dish bowls for the magnets to sit in and put some strength back in, there is no other option, they will have to be coax type as i dont have room for the crossovers.

There is no room under the seats for a sub, the seats are on the floor, the boot is full of fuel tank, fuel swirl pot, fuel filter, battery etc, very little left for a sub.

This is why i was going for the parcel shelf, that said they will be pointing towards the front of the car rather than up towards the roof.

I will try and get some photos up over the Christmas period

I will admit that I don't have first hand experience of these but these 6x9 Sony XS-692ES components have been discounted from £350 to £129: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/335710632053

They do come with grills despite not being pictured.

Many thanks all for the reply’s.

I did say that my local ICE place had closed its showroom and did not accept visitors, that’s not entirely true as I found out.

Went and picked up these Focal speakers and a tiny Phoenix gold amp.

Got a bit of work to get them to fit and look good, will post back with some progress photos.
