How do people do this? Is there a relatively affordable option for two old idiots to keep in touch on a road trip? Thanks in advance!
I bought these for a road trip to Switzerland - worked very well for the price!https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07C37W5DZ?ref_=ppx_hz...
Just seen this. Mitex General, as used by many car clubs, because they have a really good range, handy if you are separated in traffic

On a motorway you've got around 2 miles, although I was on a hilltop in France and picked up others around 6 miles away.

you could use a push to talk app such as Zello which turns your phone into a digital walkie talkie and will use you car's mic & speaker - but it does require all parties to have roaming data availability. JohnnyUK said:

yeh pmr is probably the best bet - licence free. The claims for range are direct line of sight though and will drop dramaticly otherwise.https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07C37W5DZ?ref_=ppx_hz...
You can get chinese radios that run far more (illegal) power and attach external (also illegal) antennas that you can run on the pmr frequencies - if you are that way inclined - they can only put out a maximum of 5w anyway (ignore the wild claims on the ebay listings).

They require a licence for UK use, which if i recall is specific to the area you want to use them - not sure you are supposed to use them abroad.https://www.amazon.co.uk/MITEX-GENERAL-LICENSED-HA...

We used the RT45 Walkie Talkie bought from amazon: (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Retevis-License-Professional-Rechargeable-Channels-Silver/dp/B0175ZJ6UM/ref=sr_1_3?sr=8-3) for a recent europe trip we had 3 cars and found the range pretty good, worked well within short distance and a clear motorway upto 2-3 miles
