Hello everyone,

Looking for some feedback/advice on the purchasing/installing and usability of a dash cam package.

I had a Nextbase package fitted by a Halfords technician a couple of years ago to an Aston Martin (that I have since sold) - and to be fair the chap did a very good job.

Only now with a different car being purchased very soon - I go to look at their website - and it appears that Halfords do not for example sell the Nextbase 622GW ( but not that I'm heel bent on that product if their are others out there just as good?).

I'm "all ears" ladies and gents for your top tips and pointers regarding dash cam stuff .

Thank you very much in advance

The good lady wanted a dash cam, and I bought the 622GW 'Elite View Package'. Very impressed. I also managed to fit it myself!

I'm dead against them myself as I think the more and more people use them, the more likely insurers will insist on us having them, and I'm not putting them in my cars!

If you buy direct from Nextbase they can supply the fitting, lead time about a week. I can’t remember the company they use but I’ve had a couple of 622s fitted and they were very professional

I have a Road Angel Halo Ultra 4k, only started fitting dashcams after an idiot rammed me up the arse stopped at a traffic light.

If you're not the type of scutter to deliberately create problems and then start yelling nonsense at other road users that they're ON CAMRUH, they're just a useful tool to have if ever in an awkward claim/blame scenario.

Exactly. My wife was in a no-fault accident a few months ago, and whilst the driver admitted liability at the scene, she quickly backtracked when she spoke to her husband and I have no doubt that it would have been a nightmare if we hadn’t had the dash cam evidence. It meant that we could use a third party claims company, which simplified the process.

The Boy's girlfriend had a non-fault accident on a mini roundabout. The people who pulled out on her claimed she was going super fast and didn't indicate, and that they were injured.

Her dash cam video showed all of those claims to be false.

They're good for stuff like that.

Had a Nextbase dash cam fitted as part of the purchase. Installed by RS Connect. The dash cam was ok but the wiring failed after a year. Nextbase provided a new wiring kit for free but had to pay RS again to fit it. The guy arrived late in his own car and proceeded to chop a component from the current installation and replace it with the same part from the new kit. This failed within 2 months.
Good dash cam but find a more competent fitter

Thanks everyone

I tend to agree with the sentiment - they're almost a necessary evil maybe ? Being "old school" myself - I don't want to have one fitted - but think it's probably wise.
The 622GW is the one I minded to go for so far - though the Road Angel has a pretty good rep also.

What about "living" with them? Are they a pain to start up the device or download the material from.

Me thinking - how many times have I bought something but then never fulfilled it's potential because it was way to difficult ( or I was too lazy of course! :-) )

Thx

On my Halo, the app is mostly ok, won't deny it can be a minor pain to get to the exact clip i want and save it.

But tbh I hardly ever use it. Other than very occasionally sending my mate "FFS, look at this clown" stuff it's picked up once or twice a year it never gets touched. It's an insurance policy such that when I need it, there's the last hour or so of footage in there.

Or if you buy a top-quality card it can continuously record for a couple of months

You’ll know when you need to retrieve the footage; pop out the micro-SSD card, plug into your computer and review the footage you need

It does continually record, so I definitely have several hours of the most recent footage because it loops round over it again.

The downside of my particular camera is no expansion slot for the on board storage. This is of no concern whatsoever for my use, but may be an issue for others.

Yes, I meant that with a card like the Sandisk High Endurance 512GB the dash cam will loop around after a couple of months (and do so many thousands of times over without needed to reformat or replace the card)

Of course, it rather depends on how many hours a day you are recording

Avoid Road Angel at all costs - They capture F all in parking mode. Car hit 3 times and not a thing recorded on the dashcam.

bad company

We just returned from a European driving tour. We had to avoid (or avoid getting caught) in Austria and Luxembourg where our dash cam was illegal. I believe that Portugal has similar laws.

I don’t see how our insurance companies could insist on us fitting something illegal in several countries .

I use Integral micro sd cards, never had 1 fail in 6 years using them in 3 cams, I'd just go for a basic dashcam, mines a NB 222, no gps etc to incriminate me if I do f**k up haha

Yes they are illegal in Portugal.
