Building a Simple Car Monitoring Setup Looking for Suggest
Discussion
Hi everyone,
I’ve been experimenting with a small DIY setup for my car and wanted to get some advice from people who’ve done similar projects.
I’m trying to build a basic in-car electronics system that can monitor a few things like air quality, temperature, and possibly battery voltage. The idea is to use a compact board (something like a microcontroller or single-board computer) and a few sensors, then log the data or maybe display it on a small screen.
A few challenges I’m currently facing:
Has anyone here built something similar or integrated custom electronics into their car? Would really appreciate any guidance, especially around power management and long-term reliability.
Thanks!

A few challenges I’m currently facing:
- Powering the setup safely from the car without draining the battery when the engine is off
- Handling voltage fluctuations (especially during ignition)
- Choosing sensors that are reliable in a car environment (heat, dust, vibration)
- Whether it’s better to go with a simple microcontroller or something more powerful for future expansion
Has anyone here built something similar or integrated custom electronics into their car? Would really appreciate any guidance, especially around power management and long-term reliability.
