My old boss was into his bikes and said that past 140mph a TT GPS system cant keep up and you loose the signal.
Can anybody confirm/disapprove this?

Had a mini cooper S doing 135 and it was keeping up no problem.

And on a note - This was on a private road

The highest speed I recorded on my nüvi 660 was 429 mph.

Then I found out that you're not allowed to use it in aircraft........

It may be that certain models cut out at higher speeds for safety reasons - minimising distractions.

maybe your Nuvi is much better. but even still, 430mph I wouldnt think many satellites could keep up (ones for public use anyway)

I've done just over 130mph on the autobahn - seemingly no problems...

have seen enough video footage / photograps on youtube ets showing various sat-nav and road angel type devices showing way above 140mph so would suggest that they can do much better. ...

perhaps if he was doing this on bikes that the vibration got too much for it?

as far as I'm aware. the GPS system uses all the same satellites regardless of whether its for public or military use, I think the accuracy is dependant upon the receiver

I'm pretty sure that both Garmin and TomTom use the SiRF Star 111 receiver module?

I doubt whether vehicle velocity is a limiting factor - perhaps antenna vibration or interference might have cause the 'crash' to which you refer?

The max speed currently stored in my Nuvi is 538 mph, so can't see why the Tom Tom should drop out at 140.

there are usa technology limits on altitude and speed for commercial gps systems to avoid them being modified for military purposes eg diy missle guidance, but they would not affect any thing less than a rocket powered car or military jet.

Same here, i used to live 10 minutes away from the German border and the autobahn so used to drive there almost everything, with speeds up to 160 mp/h and never had any problems with Tom tom.

I assume it's in case the pilot accidently looks at your sat nav instead of his navigation and makes a wrong turn into a mountain or somethinghehe

Ah thought it might be something to do with the unit flagging up a scamera and the pilot jamming the brakes on.
