2 DIN Navigation/Audio/iPod aftermarket unit advice needed.
Discussion
Hi,
Just registered on this forum, seems like a good place to get some advice
After trying TomTom, Garmin and NavMan GPS systems I can't seem to find the one I want for all my needs. I recently got the idea of getting a 2DIN unit to do everything I need in the car (which is iPod, GPS, hands-free and CD/DVD).
I'm quite fussy with my GPS (as you might have figured out by now) and I'm trying to get rid of some annoyances in my next purchase. Main ones are:
- Route planning - Got to be able to plan alternative/via/multiple routes
- Map update speed - Map, and your position on the map has to update under 1 second (TomTom did this pretty well)
- Map/route colour - Hate the Garmins' pink routes...
- Map accuracy - Most GPS seem to use utility/police only roads to plan routes and at lest NavMan and Garmin does not have a function to add a road to the "black list"
- Voice volume - All the top end units are pretty crap at this, especially if you have music on at motorway speeds (needs to adjust volume based on speed or at least pause music/radio while it speaks).
- Displaying information - Most GPS don’t let you adjust what you see on the screen in terms of info (time to go/distance to go/speed) only NavMan did this well. Garmin doesn’t do this at all...
- Cancelling current route - Navman did this well, with a cross on the side of the screen you could press to cancel the route, others require you to go into another menu, which is rubbish.
- Mute button - Same as cancelling route, 1 or the other has to be within easy reach.
It is amazing how difficult it is to get an after market unit to do all this well considering how much the top end models cost. I am hoping there is a 2 din unit that can accommodate my needs.
I'm looking at Clarion, let me know what you think of this one (not out yet in UK, but Russian shop sells it for about the equivalent of £1400):

Any advice would be great.
Thank you.
