Looking for a portable sat nav(under£300), but spoil for choice....

Could anyone recommend a model and why?

I have no doubt that Tom Tom users will recommend Tom Tom and Garmin users will recommend Garmin (surprise, surprise). Probably the best thing you can do is visit your local Halfords or anywhere else that stocks both models, and ask for a demonstration of the models you are interested in to see which floats your boat.

What works for one person may not work for another and vice versa. Personally I use a Garmin, but the only thing that swayed me to this make was that it was slim enough to fit in my pocket/handbag.

Personally I use a 360, but I have had it a while now and I believe it has been superceded by the 660. The reason I went for the 360 is that it comes with European street level mapping, and I do a lot of driving in Europe.

I'm not sure what the eqivalent model Tom Tom is, or how it compares, which is why I was recommending visiting your local stockist to see which one fulfills your own requirements.

I had a TT 500 before and was happy with it, but sold it to a friend, coz I couldn't read the screen when in direct sunlight. Then i bought a Garmin i3 which was really clear even under the sun, thinking of going to Europe sometime in the near future, so I'm looking to upgrade it and I've also heard that the US military uses Garmin hardware as well.

I would go for a Garmin every time. Covers all Speed cameras including Mobile sites, TT only cover fixed. Much slimmer and better value for money too.

I would recommend Getting Traffic as it works really well and saves a lot of frustration!

For your budget I would get a Nuvi 310 Deluxe. Its £269.99 and comes with traffic and Europe.

It's exculsive to Halfords so you will have to get it there. Try this :- http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/...

Hope that helps?

I've had a TT910 for a while and now have a Garmin 660 and think the Garmin is better. I don't think there's a lot to chose between the two as far as specification but as Lambochick says, the Garmin is a much more compact (but with a bigger screen), especially compared to it's equivilant TT. Depending on what you need from it I'd look through the Garmin range.
