Hi

Bit of a Mr Thicky Blackthickyadder when it comes to these things. Just want a basic van detector as opposed to a soleley database driven one. No need for satnav really.

Are there two versions of Road Angel (one with laser detector and one without?) as some of the info I have read is mildly confusing. Looks like I may have racked up me 9th point today so think i should invest in one.... Cheapest place to buy???

Ted

edit to add - anyone know the difference between Road Angel Compact and Road Angel 2 apart from size?

Hi Ted,

To answer your questions above. The compact does not pick up laser, unless you get the laser dector, which will cost yourself an extra 49.99 brand new. The compact will advice you what speed camera, is ahead. The speed the camera is set to, i.e 30, and the speed that you're doing. For example if the camera is ahead, and you are doing 36 and the camera is set to 30, this will basically say slow down, and flash red. Unfortuneately from what I remember, the road angel compact does not pick up mobile sites either.
With Road Angel 2, this does however pick up laser, but does not advise you the speed that the speed camera is set to, so this could be a nightmare if you're therefore driving on roads that you do not know. Your best bet is to go to blackspot.com and compare both the road angel compact, and road angel 2.

ps, i've got the road angel plus, which is brillaint but it's not cheap, will cost you out 250.
Hope this helps!!

I've had both a compact and a new Road Angel (Road Angel 2).

First of all, in my experience, the laser detection of the Road Angel 2 is useless. I got pinged by a mobile van and it didn't even register. The general consesus is that if you have a laser detector then by the time you're alerted to the presence of laser you've already been done.

The Road Angel Compact has a better display than the RA2 and does show the speed limit of the road when it alerts you to a camera. They both use the same database and therefore they both alert to known mobile sites, if you want them to.

It should be a no brainer that the compact is the way to go (given that laser detection is useless and soon to be illegal) however, again in my experience, the GPS of the Compact is slightly worse which has resulted in it showing me doing speeds in excess of 400 mph. Now my car is quick, but it's not that quick smile

Overall though, if I had to buy one or the other again, I'd get the compact.

Thx for the advice guys, think I may be knackered then if the lasers will become illegal as those are responsible for my 9 points, all mobile vans sadly, I manage to see the fixed ones ok, even on roads i don;t know. When will they be illegal?

The good thing about the road angel Ted, is you can set the distance, so for examlple you can still it to warn you 1000meters away, before the "safety camera" gets you mate. great for driving down south etc, on roads you don't know.

If you just want a camera detector Talex will give you everything you need - www.talex.co.uk

I went onto 9 points last November and its the best £150 I have spent. The camera database is 100% spot on. They have all the mobile areas covered and the database gets updated every week or so. I really could not recommend Talex highly enough.
