TomTom itinerary from Monaco
Discussion
My TomTom6 got hopelessly disoroentated in Nice a couple of weeks ago. There were a lot of temporary road closures, which system couldn't have known about. These were down to proving trials on a new tram system.
We drove along the coast that day and had a look at Monaco, and in to Italy for lunch.
There also seemtobe quite a lot of new motorway toll roads which weren't shown by my TomTon France and Western Europe, updated, maps. We just followed the signposting, as used by ordinary prople.
On our way home from Aix en Provence, a few days later, we did an overnight stop in Turin, which impressed us all. Coming home from Turin we visited Ivrea in Piedmont, an unspoilt little town. There are two routes you can take -- use the southern, costal route, if you can afford the time for an Italian detour. There are some really spectacular views to experience along the coast.
Thence we went through the Vale of Aostia and through the Mont Blanc tunnel. Mont Blanc is awe-inspiriing. Make sure you stop just before clocking into the toll booths. You can just luxuriate in the view for a few minutes. On the way to Mont Blanc you will pass through/near the town of Bonneville. I own a 2003 Triumph Bonnie, so it was worth pausing for a corny photo with the signpost.
We did another overnight in a cheap apartment-hotel outside Dijon, which is fascinating and has English links. Dijon is a good town to visit, I wish we'd had time for at least a day sight seeing.
Out next overnight was in Lille for a short run up to the tunnel. I like Lille. It reminds me of Leeds. There is a big mall called Eurolille. There you can find another good apart-hotel called Citadines, which I recommend. This shopping centre has a Carrefour bigger than our neighbourhood in London.
My 2,200 miles in two weeks were one of the best experiences of my life. I want to do it all again. Tomorrow wouldn't be too soon.
Hope this helps.
If you go via Dijon, try and stop at Beaune services on the A6 a few miles south of the city. I didn't have time to visit, but I once heard Ed King of RAC Foundation describe this place as the best service area in the world.
