I think I recall Garmin telling me their annual (UK & Europe?) map ugrade was due in January - has anyone heard anything and will this be FOC?

Don't know when the next version is due. I upgraded from v6 to v9 in august and it cost me about £45.

Next version due is v10, though I'm not sure when it will be available. Knowing Garmin I very much doubt it will be FOC.

Both my nüvis tell me that I should upgrade the map as it's more than a year old.....

....but the Garmin website says that no updates are available!

Has anyone heard any more news about map upgrades yet?

Mine too - I think the message is hard-coded in for a specific annual date. Garmin told me the new UK/Europe maps would be available "January 2008" but have seen/heard nothing so far.

Thanks!

It will be interesting to see how they pitch the pricing for the map updates... In the last 12 months the use of in-car GPS has increased enormously and Garmin would risk alienating large numbers of customers if they pitch their price too high.

I sincerely hope that I will be able to use one update for both my registered systems. Somehow I fear that would be a somewhat porcovolant event though...

Perhaps they can 'bundle' the map updates with the scamera subscriptions and offer both at a discounted price?

Anyway, isn't 'time dependent software' tax deductible?

A good point - the Europe mapping should get cheaper as more users exist. Out of interest, what's the cost a 2007 Europe map file anyway? The US must be the largest market by far - I recently purchaed the 2008 US mapping on eBay - £50 + P&P! I see on Garmin's site that some small European country maps are £200 each.

Bundling, nah - I think they have to purchase the traffic camera update files from a third party so it would mess up their accounting or something!

The last time I looke at upgrading my European map, I think it was in the region of £80. However as another update is imminently due, I didn't bother.

Updates are annual and are usually released around January/February time. Price can vary depending on which mapset you use (I use City Navigator Europe, currently version 9). Last year the update worked out at about £48, but this has come down gradually from around £115 five or six years ago.

In some circumstances the update is free. IIRC it depends on the purchase date of your sat nav unit (and when you registered/unlocked it) versus the date the later software was released.
