Bought myself a new TomTom XL for Xmas, more for a laugh than anything. So, I've tried to use it three times, and each time it has let me down. I tried to get it to take me to Machine Mart in Wolverhampton today. I gave it the post code, but it needed a house number, which I guessed, and it tried to take me to Telford for some reason. I tried a different number, as there is not a number on their web site address, and it took me to some other town. I tried to put the road name it, Parkfield road, and it didn't recognise it :-( Multimap.com could give me a map of the place instantly, but not TomTom.

I then tried the 'home' facility, and it took me to the local town centre, even though I have entered my address as 'home' when I set it up.

I tried 'home' again, from another place, and it told me to turn right out of a left turn only' street, that has been like that for ten years.

Altogether I am NOT impressed by this super new technology. I'd intended fixing it in the hot rod, making some bracketry, some sort of power supply, but it might well go back to Halfrauds in the near future. rage

While I'm here, are there any 'must have' updates or downloads? I logged onto the website and did some sort of upgrades, but it said I already have the latest map.

Anybody else got one of these useless things? Do they improve with age?

I've had a Tom Tom One since last Christmas, and apart from a few new roads missing from the map, it seems to be OK. I took it to France and found Le Mans without having to look at a map once (although the group I was travelling with all knew the way, so I suppose that's cheating a little bit).

You don't have to put in a house number, by the way, you can just press "done" instead and it will ask you where you want to cross the road you're looking for. Just press "anywhere" and it should work, but obviously won't tell you to stop when you get to your house number.

ETA: Just typed Wolverhampton, Parkfield Road into mine and it says it's off Millfields Road in WV4. Is that the right one?

Yep, you're right, I just tried it. My mistake was typing the street name, rather than Wolverhampton. Doh! It does say 'City': right where you put the address in. paperbag

It should have worked from the postcode though

Does it give you the same road if you put the postcode in and bypass the street number?

It comes up with Windsor road when Machine Mart is actually on Parkfield road, round the corner, but it does indeed go to the correct Windsor road when you skip the house number. Strange. I think I just need to practise more. Good job I actually knew where Machine Mart was, rather than just blindly follow the various routes the Tom Tom spewed out, but things might not always be so painless frown

But do remember that a postcode will cover up to 17 properties - so these could be on 2 or 3 roads. The finesse is in the street name/#

Save your home address by using the GPS position instead of house no. & this will sort this out

I don't save my home location as my actual house - but down the road, so thieves can't use it to navigate home.

I know some people think this is boocks, but I don't really care - I know where I live, I don't need TomTom to my door wink

That's a good idea. I'm going to do that too, although I have got a password on my TT

Me too. If somebody sees the whole family get out of the car, in town, then they steal our Tom-tom somehow, it'll take them right back to a guaranteed empty house frown
