I have just started using a tomtom and am currently using the rubbish window sucker it comes with, which I really dont like.

Am thinking of either dashboard mount or something similar.

Any thoughts are most welcome?

I bought a rubberised case for mine from proporta.com and it wedges in the right hand corner between the dash and the screen. I don't bother with the Tomtom mount at all and it works fine for me.

Do you need to drill any holes?

I made my own permanent mount for the TVR and use the original mount in the other cars.

I mount mine from behind,

It is screwed into a block in the little money holder in my Mondeo dash.

I have used velcro to mount it to the dash just below the stereo in my Boxster. It works a treat and is not in the screen blocking some of your line of sight which can get annoying.

Do a search for Brodit. They do a whole range of mounts. Depending on the vehicle they can provide a discrete bracket that clips on the airvent. It allows you to mount the TomTom lower down and just looks a whole lot neater. I have these in three cars that I drive. It allows me to swap the TomTom easily to whichever car I am using.

I put my TT-One in front of the rev counter (it's only an Accord diesel ;-) ).
I turn it upside down, use a small bit of BluTac underneath to stop it moving, connect the power from above, use the Preference that inverts the display.
It works fine with no circle on the glass, no obscured vision and it is not conspicuous & is faster to remove if you arrive at a public car park wanting to remove it then stash in the glovebox.
The only downside is that you have to drop your eyes further than if it was on the screen.

I have a tomtom 500, I still use the original mount on the windscreen. its been in my taxi for over two years and still stays on ok. The power lead has to be plugged into the unit though for it to work as the connections on the foot have been playing up and turning the device off.
My windscreen is one with gold flakes in the glass to reflect UV so it will only work if mounted in the clear zone next to the rearview mirror.
Apparently the latest models are better and have a stronger aerial so can be mounted anywhere on the windscreen.
