Hi all,

I've got a Garmin Nuvi 250 and am getting highly hacked off with it! For a starters, there's two roads near us where it misleading tells me to turn left, where in fact there is a bend in the road (left, then right, so an 'S' bend) but on one of these there is also a left turn where in fact you should be going straight on!

Anyway, I was coming out of London the other night and put my trust in her, and she got totally confused. First she told me to exit the A12 and take the 5th exit at the roundabout - I did this, against my better judgement, and as soon as I approached the roundabout she started "recalculating" even though I was doing what it told me to! It then repeated this trick a couple more times on the way out of town heading towards the A40.

Just wanted to know A) if anyone else has had this B) if there are any updated maps (although there was no data cable in the box?) and C) if I should just send it back and buy a TomTom One V3 Europe!

I do intend on using the sat nav in Europe and the last thing I need is it recalculating every 5 minutes!!

I have a nuvi 300. Best bit of kit I have ever used.

And it warms up much much quicker than the tom tom.

Get a 300

Mike

I used to have a Garmin 360T and whilst it never did what you describe it did have a few "moments", including taking me through a ford whilst claiming it was on the A5! Must say though, it did get me to Prague last year without too many hitches.

I now have a TomTom 720 and have to say I've been much more impressed. Starts up much much faster than the Garmin ever did, has (IMO) a much more logically laid out interface and has yet to have a "moment". TomTom traffic is also miles ahead of TMC on the Garmin (or on the TomTom). £40 for a year (plus mobile data on your phone but I have that included on my tariff) including speed cameras for all the maps you have is pretty good too. With MapShare, TomTom are getting thousands of updates a month from users which you can download to update your map. Any errors are fixed quicker.

So my advice would be (C) send back the Garmin and get a TomTom. If you don't trust it now you never will.

I rate my garmin nuvi 300 more highly than the tom tom offering.

And I refuse to belive there is a more simple lay out than that of the garmin..

Its smaller, thinner, has longer battery life from what I saw, and also has a great clip that is rock solid..

I have a 250 and it's the best GPS I've owned, no problems at all and it did come with a cable.

Kiwi - where did you get yours from? Mine's from Amazon - has the car charger but thats it cable wise!

I will say the cradle is very good and it loads up reasonably quickly, but other than that I'm not overly impressed - it won't just let you do a postcode search, it requires a house number as well from what I can tell (and lots of places don't have numbers!) and it seems to get confused and try redirecting me for no reason!

Not a happy bunny.

They all require a number surely?

Some postcodes are used for more than 10 property's...

And there is no sat nav as far as I am aware that will pick up the house name.. When I visit large houses that have names not numbers the sat nav always tells me pretty much exaclty where it is and what side..

I didnt mean search for house names, more big locations, such as a stadium/arena/conference centre or hotel, which won't have a number, just a postcode.

To be fair, it did find just a post code this morning fine with no house number, but as it was a big footie stadium I guess there weren't a variety of numbers to choose from! I don't think it recalculated without warning at any time either...!

What I should think is happening as it has with me is..

You need to watch the line, because sometimes if a slip road for instance runs parralell to a main road, it wont notice for a couple of seconds..

you just need to look at the distance till turn.

I find it very unlikely the unit is faulty. As said mine has served me for about 10k miles now and not faulted.

I don't have your unit though! For instance, where it told me to bear left then at roundabout take 5th exit, it noticed me going down the slip road (i.e. bearing left) off of the main road and then as I went to take the 5th eixt it recalculated! Stupid thing!!

Yes, I get that with my 360 when ever there is a junction on top of a bend, it always tells me to turn, regardless of the road.

I used my nuvi 250 in Europe last summer and it was fine. You don't have to enter a house number - just hit 'done' without entering a no. and it will go on to the next screen.
Only criticism really is that it seems to take a long time to find satellites when first turned on - maybe a couple of minutes. I'm sure it used to be faster.
