Had this happen to my Tom Tom One, basically the internal battery has dropped below the basic 3.8v, there is a recharge protection circuit built in that won't allow the unit to be charged whilst its below this voltage (Catch 22). The only way i found to get around this was to open the tom tom up then give the internal battery a 30 sec charge from a 9v PP9 battery. Check with a multimeter when done so you know its above the minimum 3.8v. Plug into the charger turn on and hey presto fixed. I'd also do a check on ebay for a new battery a its on its way out. Or simply send it back if you've had it less than two years.
It happens to all the TomTom systems for the reasons stated above. Ever wondered how your TomTom kept the time of day when turned off? Magic it ain't!
If you use it regularly enough it will never drop below that level, but a good recharge every now and then would do the battery good (ie. charge without being in use).

Sorted it out. When I stated that it would not switch back on, I meant immediately and it was fully charged. Spoke to supplier and they stated it happened sometimes after exposure to excessive heat.( I had just come back from a long hot holiday in Spain) The remedy is to press 'reset' button and 'on' button at the same time. Result, a fully functioning Tom Tom again. Thanks to everyone for the tips.
