Well for the last 2 years driving around the country as a salesman i have got sick and tired of my garmin 310 taking me down narrow country lanes, whatever mode and settings i was in.So for the last 3 months i have become a complete satnav anorak researching, asking questions ,talking to different suppliers. Then by chance came across a comment on the alpina forum , I quote this is from the alpina guy." Navigon use two methods.

First you set the vehicle, so normal, slow, fast or fastest, this will then see that you would do 90mph on a motorwayeven though it is a 70mph limit, however it also realises that you may still not avaerage more than 45mph on a single carrigeway, which is the important bit.

You then set your route choice, Fast which keeps you on motorways as much as possible, shortest which obviously takes you the shortest route or optimal.

Now optimal is the one that makes it so good imho, it will keep you on a main road all the time unless it is obvious that 3 miles across country is better than 20 miles on a motorway, and this is what most of the others miss out on. Usually there is just fast or shortest to choose from.

I know on that GPSworld forum some of the guys were hacking the Garmins route profiling to try and get it to work out things more sensibly, but I gave up and threw mine out of the Window in Scotland, kept trying to take me down 38 miles of single track rather than taking me 4 miles down a B road to get onto the dual carrigeway!!

a 40 minute journey was taking 2h30mins!! So having never considered a navigon i went for it.I didnt need m3 bluetooth etc ,so went for the 2100 max with text to speech cameras and traffic £154 and its a joy ,never ever takes me down lanes, the routing is fantastic.

Have to say that is my current pet hate about my Garmin. I just can't understand why it is being marketed with such a propensity for taking you down piddly little lanes that are entirely unsuitable.

The biggest problem is that it is not always immediately apparent that the road you are travelling on is about to peter out to a dirt track within a couple of miles.

Buddy i really recommend this navigon ,if the routes do your head in.You could take a punt ,halfords are doing the 2100 max for £89 then via downloads you can add text to speech which gives you the road names, for £15 ,The traffic can be added via download for £40.

The traffic arial is in the cigar lighter socket cable so no added wires and locks on very well.Downside is the cameras do NOT include known mobile sites and at the moment cant download other databases IE gps world cameras, but will do so in future.

Really feel good knowing i wont be going down lanes with hedgerows (i know some people say ignore satnav keep going and it will reroute but you could end up going round in circles,)the top of the range is the 8110 On the gps world site lot of info on the 8110 just use the forum search facility.

Seen that tom tom iq routes love the lanes as well.I might be boring people to death with this navigon. I was in the cotswolds today and the garmin spent all its time down unclassifieds when i worked this area,my heart allways in my mouth stressing me out.Today i didnt go down any, pure heaven!!

got some becker that was in tescos for £90, seems pretty good, got the short or fast option and has suggested the route via the roads not suitable for vehicles only a few times

no need for bluetooth as mobiles stay off when driving smile
