Tomtom - x20, x30, x40 whats the difference ?

Right , so the 5xx is UK (or home region) maps, 7XX includes Europe , 9xx includes USA.
What are the differences in X20, x30 and x40 generations ?
As I understand it :-
The older models can still get lane guidance and IQ routes which is a software upgrade.
The x20 and x30 have the same shell - presume same internals. The x40 gets a new look, but any hardware improvements ?
What does the extra money actually buy ?
Should I get a x20 and the latest map ?

Good answer from Frederick, but just to add on the hardware side:
x40 has a much better speaker (which is why F says hands-free is better)
x40 has a new mount system, where the power lead goes to the screen mount rather than to the unit - some people might prefer this new system, but I feel it is more different than better.
920 and 930 come with a bluetooth remote control included, which can actually be quite useful, 940 does not include either remote control or carry-case.
Does anyone have good experience yet of how useful the 'Live' service is? Personally, I don't expect I would pay the £8 per month after the free three month trial expired. If you are not going to pay for 'Live', you may be better off with 920/930 which include a free for life TMC Traffic receiver, although admittedly the TMC traffic information and reception will be much less good than the Live system.
On the software side, I heard that IQ Routes in the 930 only splits weekend and weekday journey plans, whereas the version in the 940 has different times for every one hour slot during the day. Does anyone know more about this? A further issue with IQ Routes is that it signficantly slows downs route calculation and re-routing times (I was comparing a long journey between 920 and 940, may not be significant for shorter journeys).
