Hi all..

despite reading lots of forums, reviews, and manufacturer websites, the Satnav industry seems very much like the mobile phone industry...

...so consumerised that they hide any real info and it's almost impossible to find out what each unit actually DOES, rather than what new catch-phrased gimmicks it has.

So, to my question, which satnav units (cheapest first wink ) allow routes to be planned in detail via Google-Maps/Earth and then uploaded to the unit?
I want to pick roads, not destinations, so A to B via one or two points in between is NO use..

Any help finding relevant info would be great..

Being a tunnel runner, i've unearthed a few programs that do this.

But there's one for tomtom, that IMHO is the best:

But this just transfers an address doesn't it!??!?!

I need to transfer routes...
here's an example of the kind of thing I'd want to make in GoogleMaps, and then transfer into a nav unit:

I tend to use Tyre - http://www.janboersma.nl/gett/index.php - to play with my routings for my TomTom.

What an awesome piece of software, if only it had Garmin compatibility it would be perfect.

It's almost enough to make me sell the Garmin and buy a tomtom actually.

So I've used tyre to plan my routes, and I now have a folder full of .itn files
I've downloaded the itn converter, but what file type do I want to transfer into in order that the route will work on my Nuvi 200W?

The software seems to suggest that .gpx is the format for Nuvis, is this correct?
And then how do I get the routes onto my nav...... use the poi loader or just put them on an sd card?

Yes GPX files is what you use when you transfer to the nuvi, I have an old 300 and it works fine .

When you open the main window on Itn convertor,
click on editor to plan your route >>
once done close window >>
click on drop down box export file format (Nuvi gpx mapsource )>>
click export this then opens save to location>>
save to a location on your hard drive (i use my Itn file)>>
then just drag and drop file from there onto either the Sd card or the Nuvi thumbup

I did 22 days of itineraries for my upcoming USA road trip in less than a day, choosing the exact roads I wanted to drive on.

I'm really hoping that my Garmin accepts them, then I'm all set.

As mentioned, a fantastic piece of software.

So I finally hooked up my Garmin to my PC today and tried to get the itinerary working.

Copied the GPX files that were created by the itn converter into the GPX folder on the Nuvi. Although the Garmin has recognised them, it's simply put all the waypoints I created in tyre as favourites, in any old order.

Should I have dropped the gpx file somewhere different?

I use Tomtom and Tyre. However, I understand that there is a very satisfactory alternative for Garmin users in the free from Garmin Mapsource program.

Garmin Mapsource using friends seem to create .gdb files. These can be written by another free conversion utility called GPSBabel.

A route is effectively a number of waypoints between your start and your end point. What Nuvi users have to remember is that not all Nuvi models are capable of accepting a route with more than one waypoint, which is what you need when importing these routes. I believe the 700 and 800 series do, but I'm not sure about the lesser models.

The 205w definately doesn't, you can have 1 via point only. What a pain, but not insurmountable, I just did a 6k mile 22 day road trip in the US using the poi files that I created on tyre.
