Just bought my first satnav but surely they are not as good as all the hype. Why for instance on a roundabout does it tell me to take the fourth exit when there are only three etc.

In my experience they are generally pretty good but certainly not perfect. The error you mention is not a common one - unless it wanted you to go back the way you have just come, or there was another road which you did not class as an exit but which the database did. However, I have always sometimes found it necessary to look at the graphical representation of junctions, as well as listening to voice instructions. With both together, the route to take is generally unambiguous.

What brand are you using?

Satnavs do vary - I've had something similar to that happen with TomTom on the N73 - it basically decided that the UK drove on the right hand side, and made me go the wrong way on roundabouts.

But overall, be it Route66, TomTom, Nokia Maps, Sygic McGuider or the good ol' NavMan, they've generally been pretty good.

I have noticed that on some roundabouts on my satnav it shows the entry and exit at some junctions as separate roads and so will add an extra junction, thereby saying fourth instead of third exit

I use tomtom and find it fautless - that said, i've never listened to it! Would drive me nuts. As long as the screen is in your field of view i cant see why thats not enough.
