Tom Tom XL just crashed

My TomTom XL just crashed. Just turned itself off and now, when turned on, goes through the initial set-up routine (i.e., right/ left handed, language etc) until it gets to the 'voice' option and just freezes. It then re-starts and keeps doing this until the battery runs out (can't be switched off now). Any ideas? I've already tried conecting it to my lap-top and re-formatting it through the appropriate software.
my 530 did this yesterday when I did a map update. And joy of joys the backup I had run using the tomtom home software before upgrading the map had only saved about 1/3 of the files.
Lucky I still had a safe backup from way back when I first used it. So I just erased all the files on it and copied the backup data onto it. Then did the map update again, this time it worked. It must have corrupted when it copied over the first time.

OK, so I've got it working again but the Western Europe map has vanished! And TomTom won't let me download it (for free) until I give them some sort of proof of purchase. It was a 2008 Christmas present and the receipt no longer exists however. Also bought with cash, so no credit card record! Can someone PM me if they can help me out here? Cheers
