My HP RZ1710 has finally packed up.

I'm in the market for a new system and interested in your experiences with getting a good signal if your car/van has a solar reflective windscreen fitted. Mine doesn't have the cut out in the coating (only up by the RV mirror).

If I opt for a stand alone system, I think I'll struggle to get a signal due to the windscreen and the dashboard ledge under which the unit will sit (previously had a wired antenna routed behind the instrument panel and sat by the OSF door glass - great signal).

But now it seems that unless I try and find a compatible/ similar iPAQ, I might have to look at re-radiating the signal from another antenna.

Any experiences with this?

My car car has a solar reflect windsreen. My old GPS didn't work through it. My Wife got a new Tom Tom One IQ routes last year and it works perfect. my HTC Desire works perfect through it too.

The new GPS chips are more sensitive so work with solar reflect windscreens.

Go down to Halfords and try some satnavs out to see if they will work with your car

Be aware that a re-radiating antenna is now illegal and has been for a number of years. If you need to have a direct input antenna then place it on the non-uv section behind the rear view mirror. Make sure that you get it the right way round, you will be suprised how many people attach them upside down. The route the cable just inside the headlining and down the A pillar and up behind the dashboard. It is suprising easy to do for a dashmounted unit.

That said, I agree with the previous post that most new chipsets have oversome this problem. I have a Bluetooth GPS receiver that works in the glove box.

I'm currently using my wife's TT GO 530 and there are no problems with locking on to a satellite.
