Hi forum,

Was wondering if I could pcik the brains of the experts:

I'm after a new satnav, which will be used pretty much exclusively in the UK. I'd like traffic, anything else is a bonus. My most recent one was a tom tom, which did the job well, no real complaints. I was looking on halfrauds ste though, and it seems traffic enabled tomtoms need subscriptions?

I chatted to a colleague who suggests Garmin's newer models are awesome, do local petrol prices, plan routes to miss rush hour, do traffic, the lot. Halfords site again implies you need to subscribe, and use a phone, or something.

Whatever I go for, I don't want a silly TMC antenna if I can avoid it - my old Harman had that and it made it a farce.

Any general forum concensus? I've tried looking at older topics, but most people seem to ask different questions!

Thanks

AG

Hi all, need some advice please. Never had a satnav system and I'm looking to purchase one and am looking for some advice. Basically I'm looking for a portable unit, that's easy to install and use, has full Europe maps and has traffic management capability in the UK AND Europe. Don't want to spend loads a money. Look forward to your replies.

Hi Guys,

hopefully i can kill two birds with one stone on here and answer both questions. With regards to the TMC services you generally don't have to pay for this anymore. Most new sat navs come with "free premium TMC" nowerdays and it's the "Live" systems that require subscription. The only noticeable difference between live and premium is that premium TMC will update every 10-15 minutes whereas the Live system is just that - Live and will update in real time. You'd only really benefit from Live services if you were doing a lot of mileage.

In terms of sat nav recommendations, Navigon have just released their new range and all of their units have the TMC antenna built into the in-car charger so that eliminates the need for a separate TMC antenna. All come with UK and Eurpoean mapping as standard and have a whole host of clever features that make them more popular than TomTom on our website currently.

We anticipate the 2510 and 40Plus so both be big sellers now they have been released so i would recommend either of those: http://www.thesatnavwarehouse.com/products/categor...

Hope that helps!

I recently purchased a Garmin Nuvi 3790T (from Amazon) and it's awesome. The voice commands feature is great when you're driving and it's got stacks of other good features. The traffic information is free too. My only criticism is the power lead is rather bulky.
Just got one too, I like the fact that yuou can use the screen as a tall screen rather than a wode screen, which is a waste of time. Makes it easier to tell which way the road is going, and getting around the 40mph crew

You may find that on some systems, European mapping does not include some of the Eastern European countries; these are then quite expensive to add on later.
