Garmin City Navigator NT Europe 2011.20
Discussion
Those of you using Garmins might like to know that City Navigator Europe 2011.20 has now been released. The download is now in an easier format; connect to Internet, connect to SatNav, go to myGarmin, go to 'My Dashboard', then follow the 'new maps available prompt' You will need to have your product key to hand.
When the download prompt appears, you now only need to click once and Garmin will automatically download, prepare the maps and install them. Come back a few hours later and all is done!
Still some errors though - the new A46/A429/M6 junction layout hasn't yet been included.

That's odd - I had 2011.10 months ago and 2011.20 yesterday....
I use the nuMaps Lifetime system - it now seems to work fine but I notice that 2011.20 uses about 40 Mb more GPS space than 2011.10 did. And that's with only 'Western Europe' loaded.

If you go to https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myUnits.h... , is your GPS still listed as a product you've registered with Garmin?
Garmin response :
"I am happy to help you. The unit only has a limited internal memory and
therefore cannot hold the updated maps. This is because each time an
update is released the file size increases due to more detailed mapping
coverage. Due to this reason the StreetPilot C510 is no longer
compatible with these maps. Therefore if you can provide me with the
order confirmation that you recieved when the transaction took place I
can refund you for the purchase."
Now - I have a SD card slot with a card installed....so I'm starting the argument with that.

Ah - sorry to hear that.
My original problem with nuMaps Lifetime was due to insufficient computer C-drive space as you now need to have about 13Gb clear for the download / installation process. But then I bought a new computer and, although the download went fine, my nüvi 660 didn't have sufficient internal space for a complete map update. So I specified 'Western Europe' and that did the trick.
They might perhaps give you the latest map set on SD card as compensation for having rendered their product unfit for your purpose, but they'll probably only do that once...
Really they should ensure that there is City Navigator Europe NT 2011 version which is compatible with existing products - the 'enforced obsolescence' they've caused you is hardly your fault.

I use Garmin sat nav and like them a lot. got mine on-line at www.rpadistribution.co.uk. Very cheap and would recommend them. The only thing that did annoy me a little was when they re made the A2 I paid for a map update and it still was showing the old position of the A2 so when you go through the changed area the Garmin gets lost. Not a big problem though

Since the nuMaps Lifetime product is tied to one specific GPS registered with Garmin, it is hardly surprising that downloading to an SD card is not possible. Otherwise there would be nothing to stop people using that SD card in other GPS units. Or for fraudsters to copy it and to sell copies to others.
I've suggested to Garmin that a small 'transfer fee' should be available, to allow customers to transfer their nuMaps Lifetime to a different Garmin GPS as this might keep such customers loyal and stimulate sales of new systems.
If you are politely persistent with Garmin customer service, they can be very flexible and generous with their response.

Much as I hate to disagree with you Nick - I have to in this case.Garmin will happily sell me a new CityNavigator NT map set for £75 which I can download (or get on DVD) and install to the SD card in my C510. That map set needs to have an unlock code applied to it which will only allow it work in one unit. They've operated that system for several years. In fact, if my i3 hadn't suffered a failure of the USB port at a time when I needed it in a hurry, I'd still be using that (I've since repaired it, but am too cheap to buy maps for two units until SWMBO needs to use one at the same time that I do).
I cannot see why they cannot use the same mechanism for the Lifetime subscription - the maps are clearly available, they just refuse to make them available for "obsolete" units through the Lifetime subscription. Their definition of "useful life" does not match mine. It is a creation of their marketing department and smacks of profiteering and poor customer support to me.
Other vendors seem a little more honest in their subscription systems - fixed at 12 or 18 months.
OK, understood. I thought that you meant that you were wishing to download and create an SD card much like one of Garmin's own SD cards. Which don't need any unlocking codes.
For example, the City Navigator NT USA SD card which I had in my nüvi660 now languishes in my spare GPS - because the nice folk at Garmin gave me a free copy of the latest US card following problems experienced last year.

Marshalla, please take it from someone who knows! I too have a Garmin c510 and have the full Europe NT Maps Version 2011.10 installed on a 2GB SD Card. It works perfectly and I have the Radar Warning on the same card. OK, it's almost 1.96GB full, but it works. You might consider buying a 4GB SD Card as that will also work and serve you well for the future. Be careful which SD Card make you buy - I use the "Kingston" brand and don't be tempted to buy any fancy high priced and high-speed models as they won't work.
Also, you might like to stick with the Map Version that I have, as the 2011.20 just adds Buildings and Junction View which will not work on the c510 anyway
If you want help with it please PM me.

No, there are certainly a few map changes as well. For example, the roundabout on the A452 between Balsall Common and the B4102/A452 junction for one and the little mini-roundabout off the B31 slip road near Eriskirch, Baden-Württemberg for another.
But it does seem to take Garmin ages to catch up with new roads, I agree.

Obviously there are a few map changes, but the main changes, which add to the size of this update are for Buildings and Junction View in East Europe. I really think it is about time that Garmin begin to think "small" and not expect us all to want to travel to East Europe. Trouble with the Americans (sorry Canadians!) is that they all think we wander all over the place, yet most of us plainly don't! Why don't they do a simple West European Map which would suit most people.
The issue, for me, is not about getting the maps now - it's about Garmin's lousy attitude to their customers. I bought a "Lifetime" subscription and they pulled it from under me without any warning at all. Nothing, no email, no announcements - not even a "sorry, your unit is now obsolete" on the "My Garmin" page.
They did similar things to me too Marsalla! The last trick being to make a special sale over Amazon of a Nüvi model at a very good price. I ordered one as there were still a number on stock and I was even given an early delivery date (within 3 days). The day before shipment they withdrew the offer saying they had wrongly calculated the offer price and refused to deliver. The whole thing was a collusion with Amazon, of that I am sure, and neither Amazon nor Garmin will answer my letters of complaint. To employ a solicitor to act on my behalf would surely bring results, but is it worth the risks?
That is why I always seek to prove them wrong, at every turn! And by the way, today I bought a 4GB SD Card just for the hell of it, copied the 2011.20 GMAPSUPP.IMG to a temp directory on my computer in which I had already copied the existing files from my existing 2GB SDCard. The new GMAPSUPP.IMG overwrote the existing file, plugged it into the c510 and it worked without problem.

Those of you using Garmin SatNavs might like to know that City Navigator NT Europe 2011.30 has now been officially released.
Even with just 'Western Europe' installed, I only had about 0.7Mb 'device' space left on my nüvi 660 until I deleted the MP3 clips - this download is almost 50Mb larger than the previous version.
Took about 3.5 hrs to download, prepare and install the Western Europe map set.
