Third Party Software/Garmin

I've picked up a cheap Garmin Nuvi 200 with maps from 2007 (I think) on there. I was going to pay for the latest map update but got to wondering - is there an open source alternative to the Garmin maps, if so can I get them to run on my Nuvi 200 and if the answer to both of these is yes - does the open source version compare to the Garmin version?

Mods, apologies if this is in breach of some EULA or similar. I'll have to plead ignorance on this matter.

Haven't tried them myself - but I may have to due to Garmin's decision to drop support for my unit.
