sat nav updates?

Hi new to the forums, not new to bm's. I recently purchased a 2002 m3 cab, its got sat nav, but the disc is the original it came out the factory with, i want to update the disc, do the newer disc need a dvd unit in the boot? as i have the 2002 cd version. I'd really like to update the firmware, at present its just a 'birds eye' view, anyone know if the display is more detailed if updated? even 3D? anyone got any suggestions about where and how to update the firmware? hav'nt got a clue where to start. Any help much appreciated.

A lot of people with the same dilemma as you have ditched the on-board sat nav and have gone for a stand-alone unit, Tom Tom or Garmin.
