I can recommend you avoid tomtom for now. I have a 530 which works very well, I bought a 550 as an upgrade and its not very good. Several things the 530 does that the newer 550 doesnt do, plus it crashes a lot and is now winging its way to tomtom for them to look at it and try to work out why it keeps crashing and going slow.

I hear even worse horror stories about the new 1000.

Have a look at their Outlet Store for some real bargains on older models which, it appears, work better. They come with up to date maps and speed cameras so good to go.

TomTom is pants, I now use the satnav on an HTC which is much better and covers europe. A pal has a Garmin which is very good and retails well within your budget

ive bought TomTom XL Live Plus Sat Nav - UK, ROI & Europe from halfords priced at £169.99 with 1 years free live services and 4 free map updates.

I also bought a genuine tom tom leather case, i got a good chunk of money of it as ive got a friend who works there.

Not used it yet as ive had to come straight to the office will be having a look when i get home. smile

I hope you don't regret that - I fear you will soon fall foul of map zoning. The TomTom website says your XL device has only 1GB onboard and no SD card memory expansion slot - I can't see how you could get even the old Europe map on there, never mind the newer ones that are >2GB.

Good luck.
