iphone 4 and satnav
Discussion
I know there sthe other iphone thread at the moment but I want to talk specifically about performance on the 4 as it has multitasking and is a bit quicker
looking at copilot and navigon (and tom tom although it looks to expensive and people are saying v1.6 doesnt work too well))
has anyone had any success with these and would i need a cradle with the GPS booster or could i just use a cheap cradle with inbuilt charger+speaker ?
cheers

TomTom is very good on the iPhone4 as is Navigon, the main deal breaker for me is to add third party speed cameras and receive warnings from within the app which can be acheived using the TomTom app without jail breaking the hardware.
As for GPS performance you won't need anything other than a powered holder for the iPhone4, the GPS is considerably better than the 3G/ 3GS devices. You need the power though, any GPS app will hammer the processor and flatten the phones battery if its not externally powered. Personally I use a Brodit active holder and a Pro-Clip to suit the car, but there are cheaper alternates to this, I prefer the quality Brodit provide and have used their kit for a number of years in my cars.
Another app worth considering is Sygic as is iGo.
Loaded to my unit is TomTom, iGo, Sygic, Navigon, Co-Pilot, G-Map, Navmii, Nav4D and having used them all TomTom is my first choice based upon ease of use, IQ Routes and the HD Traffic as well as the all important third party POI support. Second would be Sygic again due to custom POI support even though its a bit of messing around to configure the files, third Navigon, fourth Co-Pilot (I never seem to get on with the user interface as it seems counter intuative in use) G-Map, Navmii and Nav4D are not worth bothering with due to the stupid routes they tend to produce leaving iGo, which is capable but again I have never really got along with the user interface so don't tend to use it - Mike

I've been using Sygic on the iPhone, with it in a Dension cradle which plugs into the back of my headunit for pretty much complete integration. Haven't had any need for the GPS booster thingy that TomTom do, perhaps in the center of London it might have helped, but I'm nor usually driving around there.
Hi guys,
I've been deliberating over getting the app for my iphone 4 or just buying a TomTom. Quick question, how quick is the navigation to respond to your movements, I ask this because anyone who has tried to navigate using Google maps will know how dreadful the experience can be... by the time it tells you to turn your already past the junction! Also, I presume all the data is preloaded in the app? So you don't need a 3g connection for it to work? Correct? If so, how much room does the app take up?

I would say the TT app on the iPhone4 is just as fast and responsive as any of their standalone GPS units, in some cases the iPhone outperforms the standalone products. The ability to have a single device negates carrying loads of kit and because its your phone you are far less likely to leave it in the car for it to get nicked unlike the dedicated device.
I like the option to have my music and nav all from a single unit, drop it in to a powered cradle and then use Bluetooth to stream the audio to the cars speakers including the handsfree (which is impossible on a standalone device) - Mike

RE: Navigon...
I was expecting VERY little but crikey, i am very impressed on iphone4
Everything is displayed properly, i can switch from time to destination to arrival time, useful speed warning prompts, the voice is very clear and loud (you don't need a separate speaker), it says prompts like 'keep going straight ahead' which is useful, the positional update seems pretty much bang on as you move and best of all the maps are very very clear/simple, the best i've used, better than garmin and very easy to read (I wont even mention tom tom maps). They also scroll very smoothly which helps a lot. I was suprised with the iphone4 gps as well. It seems more than accurate.
not sure what a garmin/tomtom costs these days for full europe + reality view + text to speech etc.. but £69 aint too bad I reckon and its one less box i have to worry about

Navigon makes the others feel cheap in comparison, and also their 'optimum' routing is so much better than anything from TomTom or Garmin, it just seems to take the routes you would when you know the area, unlike the others that either want to take you miles across country to save a couple of miles or take you an extra 30 miles to keep you on the motorway.
A big thumbs up from me for Navigon on iPhone, but always been a fan since swapping to them about 5 years ago.
