Had IQ XL Europe Routes for a while now but after travelling through Czech Republic recently I realised that it was time for an update, so on parting with £67.00 I was told that my device couldn't install/update the 42 countries I originally had on the unit in the 2Mb of memory that was available. Bear in mind that I regularly travel from the UK to East Europe aswell as a lot of western Europe I need all my maps on one device. I was told that I had to plug the device into a laptop and download the respective zones when I entered them. What a load of bks, the guy from tom tom though it was acceptable to have plug my GPS in a fking laptop halfway down a fking autobharn! So I now have a sat nav that has all of Eastern Europe on it but not France....Great. I can't even go back to the original maps because they've been deleted! rolleyes

I had the same issue when I was driving from the UK to Poland last year, the map update is too large for the device (2GB+ and there is no scope for adding more memory in these ones) so you have to pick regions, unfortunately those regions don't always include all the countries you want to visit on that trip.

TomTom actually allowed me to downgrade my map to the previous version that included the whole of Europe, to do this they modified my account, I deleted the existing map from the Home application (and the local backup) and then it advertised the old one to me. Tech support had to set all this up for me though.

They were quite apologetic and offered me 20% off any other current device by way of compensation but this still didn't bring their online shop prices close to those offered on the high street.

Once I got back I reverted back to the new map as I'm not planning to drive outside the UK in the short-term and I wanted all the Live services I pay for to work properly with the latest routes.

Kick up a fuss with them but I think the main lesson to learn is that you need your next unit to accept memory cards. They obviously don't consider this when they make new maps and don't think people paying a little more for full European mapping will actually want to use it.

Spoke to a new member of the Tom Tom customer services staff and she was very helpful. She send me an Eastern European package that included all the countries I need without having to resort to the 'European ZONE' which took me in to Russia, Bulgaria, Romania and a few 'Stans'!. I also deleted all the voices that wernt English and looks like I've got all the maps I need.......its still going on e-bay though! Probably upgrading to a Tom Tom XL 1000 European.

That was my initial reaction too but then I thought it would just be letting them win so I haven't gone for it yet smile

Also, I have read that this new generation of TT's does not have expandable memory, currently does not cope with mult-waypoint itineraries or user POI files, and has a rather disappointing laptop connection process.

I should be delighted to be contradicted iIf this information is out of date.

I guess you can't use a memory card in your device? I had similar but just put a bigger card in it.

They have released an update to most of the new devices which adds third party custom POI file support, sadly it doesn't work very well in use as you have to install the POI files one at a time, also it doesn't have a way to put the OGG Vorbis sound files on to the device for true spoken alerts when using a Third Party Speed Camera database - Mike

I got a Tom Tom with the micro SD slot (and itinerary file capability) for exactly this reason.
I us the onboard memory for the UK maps and a 4GD microSD for the EU stuff just switch map as you cross the channel wink

Mine is a 550 GO Live with the HD traffic as well.
