Hi guys i have a TomTom 720 or maybe 520 with Euro maps which must be coming up to 4-5 years old now.

It will last for 40mins to an hour off charge and never freezes so is pretty reliable in my eyes.

However more and more i'll be driving in a new town (dont use it unless i've never been there cant see the point) and new roads or changes throw it off i.e. Glasgow where alot of work has happened to the main roads.

I'm nervous because i'm unsure what benefit i'll get from having a new Garmin or TomTom? Reading on here has lead me to believe my current device wont be able to fit new maps due to the capacity needed.

Anyway budget is 250 and looking for a do it all device inc things like bluetooth.

Or maybe is woth getting the Ipod4 TT kit although it is quite a bit of money to my mind but is with me at all times.

Buy a new map. Just make sure you get the one with 2GB (or something similar) in the name and you'll be fine

I had a similar situation with my One XL
I bought one of these;

http://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/products/tomtom-outlet...

Plus a 4GD Micro SD and the Western Europe 2GB Map on download
Put a valid VAT no in against a Company name and you will get 20% off wink

I use the internal memory/UK for UK driving and the microSD/2B EU for EU Hoons.
HD traffic, map updates and safety cameras are all bang up to date.

I don't think bluetooth work very well in any of these things - even if it'll link then the quality is poor.

Do you use it in Europe - £250 seems bonkers and they all do pretty well the same thing?

Yer would have to have Euro maps.

Price is based on what i paid last time and my fear that 100 quid units will be no better than what i've got now... and because no one in currys (et al) tell me the benefits of buying a newer unit i'm feeling a bit bewildered with them.

One option is to change the battery on the 720, it is something you can do yourself, if you need some instructions have a read of my post http://www.pocketgpsworld.com//modules.php?name=Fo... but please read through the remainder of the thread where other users have added information about getting the battery off the PCB (its glued to the multi-layer circuit board which is rather poor in terms of design).

If you don't feel up to changing the battery there are a couple of places that offer a battery replacement service.

With the battery changed update the device to the latest software (Navcore 8,351) then update your map to the latest European map, for this you will be better getting a 4GB or larger SDHC memory card as the latest map covering Europe is larger than the available storage capacity from the internal memory. If you tend to add lots of mp3 tracks to the device you can use an SDHC card up to and including 32GB in size.

The update to the device will be cheaper than a new device and you will retain the full capability that you get with the 720, newer units don't have the full feature set you have with the 720 so as you are happy with it I would go for an update rather than a new toy - Mike

I bought a Garmin Zumo 550 a while back. 3 weeks later, the map was out of date. I bought for £99 lifetime map updates (whole of Europe).

Works a treat. Just updated today to the latest version.
