garmin nuvi 310d.wtf.help needed

hi all.i've got a 310d and its doing my head in.i recently bought a new car charger for it because i lost the original one.since i've been trying to use it lately its not working properly.when i plug it in it automatically switches to a screen that looks like a picture of a sat nav plugged into a box.it then wont turn on or off.i leave it for 5 minutes then unplug it before turning it on only to find the battery dies about a minute later.do you think it could be a problem with the charger or the sat nav?any help apreciated

Is it a Garmin charger or a generic item?

The wiring of the USB plug indicates to the device whether it's a high or low current charger, so if it's a generic item it could be your GPS isn't seeing the type it expects.

i bought it off ebay.the advert just said it worked with my sat nav

It thinks it is plugged into a PC. I have just plugged my (older) Nuvi into mine, and the picture you describe appears along with a progress bar. When the progress bar completes, Windows mounts the drive - but that's not going to happen with a cigar lighter.

You need the Garmin charger as it uses a slightly non standard pin out for the Mini USB plug, use the wrong lead and it will indeed behave as you describle thinking its plugged in to a computer, you will have to purchase a Garmin lead and don't believe e-bay adverts there is some real crap on their these days - Mike
