Mud

I got the family wagon bogged down in mud at Epping Forrest yesterday. After a protracted period of people trying to help me push it out, and a towrope snapping, a helpful German (I think) chap turned up, and had it back on firm ground in about 5 minutes. How do i learn to do this?

Main things are: turn off traction control, higher gear like 2nd and don’t give it lots of throttle, the torque spins the wheels...just let it chug on tick over.

Sometimes a little bit of brake can stop the spinning wheel and send drive to the one with more traction.

Another trick if you can get a little bit of movement is to alternate forward and reverse to rock the vehicle back and forth until it gains enough momentum to get moving.

You could....if you had a pump....deflate some tyre to spread the grip, and do as above....

Or get your wife's best coat, lay it under tyre and slowly move off, gripping the coat gaining traction

This can be surprisingly effective. In a RWD car, it requires a spot of handbrake; in a FWD car, left-foot-braking.

Unless you're driving a modern VAG car with DSG...... When you touch the brake it kills the throttle so left foot braking is a no no!!

Did he make you turn your back or something?
What did he do?

Use little or no throttle, clutch gently up and move off. It is mainly driving technique. Of course it is also:-
Chose a dry spot, preferably cinders, slates, gravel etc.
Parking facing a slight downhill slope.
Mud tyres.

In the annals(sp?) of history, ribbed condoms are excellent at getting "more traction in the mud"...
