Defensive Driving Courses For The Public??

Hi,

Has anyone here done one of the above?

My father has done a course through work but he was looking at the same kind of course but for the public so the family could take one.

We live in Hampshire if thats any help for location wise. Also prices would be great.

What do you mean by "defensive"?

They're quite common around in this part of the world, if it's "defensive" as in learning to drive safely.

Defensive driving in terms of tactical evasion and protection, is another matter.

Evasive & Offensive driving is a different matter & you will have to look at specialists.

I should add that the "defensive driving" I refer to above is a mis-nomer.

I'd call it more of an Observed IAM pre-test.

As VH said, IAM and RoSPA promote this and teach it too. If you want courses, there is Cadence, Don Palmer, RideDrive, etc., who offer short courses (half-day to two days) on the subject.

The "evasive" driving course would be really something I imagine. I expect 50% would be about spotting situations on the road that limit escape options and simply not being there..and 50% or so the techniques involved in fast, confined manouevres for turning around and getting away?

Grand fun. Whilst it's not serious and there isn't anyone actually taking pot-shots at you.

Back on topic: If you are based in Hants there are good IAM and Rospa Advanced Driving/Riding groups nearby to most of Hampshire. Well worth a look.

...and if you speak nicely to Von it is possible he will be able to recommend someone, that is if you really wish to pursue the matter.

I don't think it was AIM he was on about. More a day or two course , advanced basics I guess. He is away currently so I can not be much more help.

He doesn't work for the blue company. More of a pink company, being Arqiva, the Ex broadcasting section of NTL.

If he is looking for a good professional coach, Cadence and Bespoke are in the wrong part of the country. He might like to try Bernard Aubry, who has a great reputation (and is one of the many I have been to).

His prices look a bit higher than some of the others, but you have to expect to pay upwards of £300 per day in addition to circuit costs for any of the well known coaches. There are certainly competent instructors around who charge less than half, but they may be more difficult to find.
