Colleague of mine is thinking of going in for IAM but has a dangerous driving conviction on his licence.

Conviction was just over 2 years ago, got a 1 year ban but no points.

How long until the IAM would let him take their test? Presumably rehabilition of offenders means he can eventually, but I'm not sure. Also, could he join a local group and get observed runs before that?

I have no idea if IAM have preventative rules in this circumstance, but it would be a bit mad if someone who had driven very badly was seeking to improve and was not welcomed!

No prob. He has several options:
- Check with IAM HQ for the current guidance www.iam.org.uk
- Do an IAM DriveCheck, for which I believe there are no restrictions, and follow on with observed drives from his local group.
- Do an "accredited" advanced course with www.RideDrive.co.uk to obtain an alternative advanced driving qualification. Highly recommended! Better than IAM, in my experience of having done both. No restriction for points, previous ban, etc.
- I believe there's no restriction for RoSPA either, if there's a local group in reach: www.roadar.org.uk

RoSPA RoADA? The test is graded, and maintaining the annual subscription gets free retests every three years.

Surely he would be their ideal candidate, teaching people to drive safely is their goal and he clearly cant do it on his own ;-)
