Hi All
My Volvo xc40 will soon be due it's first service .
Do I have to use an authorised dealer or can I go to an independent volvo specialist ?
I note to get a quote online dealers want to know your reg first. This suggests to me the quote is logged online amongst dealers and so if you try and shop around there will be little variation.... so is a bit of waste of time trying ... had this before with a previous car as my data was shared amongst all the dealership.
I am looking for a service in London.
thanks for your advice

You don't have to use a franchised dealer. As long as the independent is VAT-registered and documents following the Volvo service schedule, the warranty will be preserved.
Tbh I would probably use a franchised dealer for the first three years, but up to you.
Many franchised dealers are owned by large dealer groups (eg Waylands) who generally have a central record of their customers. So if you go to another dealer in the group, they'll have your details already; they may also have standard pricing across the group. However if it's owned by a different group then I doubt they would share information. If you are concerned you could search on Autotrader for XC40s of the same year and model (engine etc) as yours, and borrow their registration numbers to get 'fresh' quotes each time.
You could also look up an XC40 owners group to try and get some recommendations for servicing in London.

Is the car on PCP, lease, or bought with cash? If it's on any kind of finance agreement, the terms of that may specify main dealer only for servicing.
In London, the best way to save a bit of money would be to have a day out to Swindon, Northampton or similar that isn't London/home counties, but not that far away, and get it serviced there.

First service for the car or in your ownership?
I'd always get a dealer services for the first service.
Any issues down the line especially around anything involving "goodwill" and you just know it's going to be a more awkward conversation if the car doesn't have a dealer history whatever the law should day.
