My bro in law had one for about 2 years. A bit rough and ready compared with the T5. Went quite well though!

Hmm, looks like I won't be getting one afterall! Just phoned Tesco to see how much it would be to switch my insurance to a T4, and, despite being able to get a quote for the full year on their website, she said they wouldn't insure me until I'm 24! And then the cheapest quote elsewhere is £2k

Have you tried the Volvo Owners club or the AA?

Worth it as there isnt anything else on the road with that performance for the money! Good luck

Just tried the AA...a bargain at £3,260! So I phoned Chris Knott Insurance, who were on the Volvo Owners Club website, and spoke to a lovely lady...who was geting quotes for around £2k again She told me my best hope to try speaking to a manager at Tesco Insurance to see what they can do, because I've already got half a year's no-claims with them and it'd be a shame to lose it I'm only 21....

Strange thing is, though, that it's only a group 16 car, and I've had quotes for cars in groups 17 and 18 that have been much cheaper. Grrr, insurance is annoying!

Ok, just re-tried Tesco, getting a quote for a T4 SE,rather than a T4 CD, and they'll insure me

And it's cheap, too...very strange. Now I just have to find one!

I looked at a 2.0 T which is still pretty quick, just not so manic.
Maybe a stop gap until your NCB builds up? Just a suggestion.....

Tried them...I think they were about £1,300. I can switch my policy from the current car to a T4 with Tesco for about £380 until September...so think they've won

Tell you what, it's not easy finding a T4! Still hardely anything in Auto Trader and the like, so phoned the local main dealer today to see if they had any part-exchanges hidden away. The chappy sounded all happy and helpful, said they might have a '99 somewhere, and then asked how much I wanted to pay. Maximum £4k...his voice changed and the conversation was soon finished! Excellent...

As an aside, what kind of MPG should I expect from a T4?

Cheers

I don't get this insurance quote lark. I'm with Tesco and I got insurance on my T5 with non-standard, but factory fit bits for less than a grand and that was when I was 23.

Try to take out the policy online if you can, it may well be cheaper.

edited to add --> Driven a T4 on a few occasions, before I had my T5 and I was impressed with its keen-ness to get moving. Oh, and you shouldn't have any problem averaging over 30mpg if it's a manual. Although if you drive it hard expect a fair bit less.

That's okay then...I only averaged 30 mpg from the last tank in my 1.4 Peugeot 306, although I think that was a definite case of driving hard to purposely get as low a mpg as possible to help justify getting a T4

Hello mate, not sure where you live, but try the attached link to Volvo site:
www.volvoselectedusedcars.com/control.cfm
I've a V40 T4 and think its probably one of the most underrated cars about. Goes well and v comfortable cruiser. Fuel consumption not its best asset, however, I normally get about 23 - 26 around town when I'm not driving the TVR!
Good luck in your search

Hi again James

Did a national search on there and they're all a bit out of price range unfortunately

I think people must buy them and keep them forever, because I've seen a fair few driving around over the past couple of months, but only a handful for sale...and mostly at the other end of the country! Ah well, I'll persevere

Cheers

If you don't mind a trip up the M4 then try Ravenscroft in Basingstoke and PGI in Farnham.

I've had 3 cars from Ravenscroft, never had one from PGI and they can be a bit pricey.

If you have a 4k budget you will only get an abused T4 that could be more chew than its worth, be better off looking for an older T5 at that price.

Nice cars there guys! Agreed on the T4 being underrated. T5s are fairly well known, but few have heard of a T4. We have a 2.0T, and I think it's a great car apart from the torque steer!

cheers

James
