anyone have any tips for a burnt metal look on jet nozzles /exhausts?

prefer something cheapish , i know alclad do some effects but cant really stretch to several tins of alclad for a small job

Alclad really is the best option, but you can simulate the darkened scorching effect by spraying a very thinned black paint- I used this technique on my Mp4/5B with a base coat of alclad jet exhaust (wich is avery pale gold shade) and then gradual shading with very thinned tamiya flat black.

Never tried it but some of the transparent Tamiya colours might give that heat discolouration you see on exhausts.

Citadel Badab Black or Devlan Mud washes might also do the trick.
