First post in the SM area so be kind...smile

Have been left some money to invest and I've always fancied getting hold of some of the toys of my youff.

Love to have an original Batmobile, Joe 90 car and Space 1999 Interceptor.

On looking around, I have found an original Batmobile in box with all the little accessories for £500..eek

Is that really what they command now?

Anyone got some? where to find them and what to pay? Advice from the knowledgeable please?

Kev

No one here will know such absolute details.

Just search auction sites and model collector mags For Sale sections and you will get an idea of the current values.

Maybe a trip to a local collector's swap-meet or fair might be worthwhile. There are quite a few held throughout the UK.

I take it you're thinking of Dinky, Corgi toys? If that is the case, do not believe the occasional hype from such learned organs as the Daily Mail and the Antiques Road Show. Yes, some diecast models fetch a high premium, but it really does depend on which casting it is, which decals are used, which interior colour has been used etc etc. The rarer the version, the more the premium. In the case of the Batmobile this even comes down to wheel colour and wheel style. For this reason, I'd never recommend them as an investment.

The cheaper way to satisfy your boyhood dreams is possibly to get a rough model restored. Spares are readily available, as are very good quality reproduction boxes, so you can have something to display that is for all intents and purposes a mint boxed model, but at a fraction of the price (and obviously a fraction of the 'worth' to a speculator). They'll never fool an expert, but it will be very small details that tip the hand, such as slight shades of plastics and rivet details.

Drop me an email if you'd like to chat more about restorations.

Couldn't agree more with last poster...

It really makes me laugh when I read stories about people buying models as an investment, or those who find a rare car in the loft and suddenly everythinks, wow I must be sitting on a fortune!! Time they smelt the coffee...

I agree that some very very very VERY rare models do command what I still think is silly money for what is a small amount of metal!

Is a collection really that important that moeny is no object? I guess if you have the money and want to spend that kind of money on a model then fine - it's their choice I guess.

You only have to look on eBay to see what kind of prices modern day models go for - not much. I have loads of models all boxed away but I'm slowly selling them off to focus on just a handful of models. I saw one on eBay last month that I do not have and is pretty rare but the guy was asking the bidding to start at over £100. I will never spend more than the RRP for anything, it's just not worth it in my eyes.

I collect because I enjoy it - so if you've found an old model that brings back childhood memories then my advise is simple - if it's in mint condition, put it on display, if there are a few chips - get it fixed and then put it on display and get the enjoyment yourself.

I certainly am not thinking that I could retire on my collection, even if I sold them all at the RRP I probably would be looking at only around £30,000 and if you think you'll be able to retire on that these days then good luck to you smile

Buy them and enjoy them for what they are, an assembly of metal and plastic moulded parts wink

Do you mean UFO Interceptor or Space 1999 Eagle Transporter?

I''ve got a pile of old Dinkys and Corgis in the loft (specifically, Mum's loft).

There are some I'd love to restore now - eg Dinky Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle, Thorneycroft Antar Tank Transporter and Centurion, and Jones Fleetmaster Crane. So I think it's time I called Red Firecracker.

(I've got all the Captain Scarlet and UFO Dinkys, the Joe 90 car fell to bits, never had the Joe 90 'Sam's Car', and I flogged all my MiB Space 1999 stuff on the 'Bay.)
