Anybody else get any models for christmas?
Heres mine...

Note - not sure the Hotewheels gt3 counts as a scale model but it was from my daughter so I've put it with the rest.
I also have the Moggie model, just reminded me as not seen it for years, may have to have a look...Heres mine...

Hi, not a regular around here, but I got this for Xmas. I'm about an hour in....
Haynes build your own internal combustion engine.

Bought that for my nephew and spent most of the evening building it with him. Make sure you read the corrections about setting TDC on no 4 cylinder rather than no 1 - guess who didn't and had to backtrack a bit Haynes build your own internal combustion engine.

Bought myself 2 vintage BBR models this year ( who else would be dumb enough to buy them for me !)
These were made in Italy in the early 90's. The detail is amazing, especially the photo etched Borrani wire wheels. The pictures don't do them justice.
They are both 1/43 scale ( approx. 3.5 inches )
Box date stamped 14th March 1991 BBR Factory assembled
1938 LE MANS ALFA ROMEO 8C 2900B.

1964 ALFA ROMEO TZ. Again an early BBR model

I did not get a single model.....
So I bought 2 myself, a 1:24 Hawker Hurricane. (To go with my completed 1:24 Mk IX Spit).

And a Millennium Falcon..as I just fancied it in my display collection.

Both should arrive tomorrow.

I got something like one of those, huge fun, along with the embarrasment of my oldest doing a much better job of control. The blasted gyro (or something) appears to have screwed up, it just throws a fit after a few seconds of flight time

After having played with a simple 3 channel then a 4 channel (Blade MCX), I appear to have a rather more challenging job of learning to fly this
(Even the sim is proving a challenge to just hover it at the moment)

Is that the 6 channel 3d one? I have the MSR and were quite interested in these but was a bit put off about everyone saying the blades fly off sometimes! So keep an eye on your blade grips.
Very jealous though, keep us updated on how it flies.
Just picked a load of new batteries for mine up from hobbyking, nice and cheap!

Yes - it's the 3D one. It's the v2 model - got the updated blade grips (with a "B" embossed on them) and a couple of other mods (including grommets on the ball links on the swash plate) so hopefully should be ok.
Main issue is with the incompetence of the pilot. Having crashed it a few times within 2 seconds of getting airborne in the garden I'm now spending significant time on the simulator before having another go at wrecking it. Looks like this is one Xmas pressy that's going to provide hours and hours of entertainment/challenge.
I still can't get over the level of engineering in something so small and (relatively) cheap.

Have you tried leaving on a flat surface for a few seconds after you plug it in before taking off?Whats the deal with leaving on a flat surface? I'll try anything.

Not that I'm aware of. Normally just disconnect from the charger, switch both on, and fly away. Except now it just goes up then goes all epileptic.

Process should be:Whats the deal with leaving on a flat surface? I'll try anything.
1. turn on controller and wait a few seconds
2. connect battery/power on helicopter
3. immediately helicopter is on, put it down on a flat surface and wait say 10-15 seconds (or more)
4. start to fly
Reason to turn controller on first is to ensure that it's available and running when the helicopter is turned on. With some models turning on the heli without the controller on can send it into "bind mode".
Also good practice for safety when using larger/more powerful models. You don't want them spinning up without being linked to a controller.
Reason for immediately putting the helicopter onto a flat surface as soon as it is powered on is that one of the first things the heli will do on power up is to initialise its servos. If the heli is at an angle or being moved around the servos don't initialise properly which can lead to unpredictable behaviour
The other thing to check is that as well as the helicopter being fully charged, are the batteries in the transmitter ok? Might be worth changing these just to make sure that it's not a weak signal or something causing loss of control.
