So last week I won a fairly rare Tamiya Rothmans Porsche 956 for £10 delivered. It had been started (engine block glued together and "painted"), and I also found that the rear tyres were wrong. Seller offered to discount the price, but since I had some spares off an old NewMan 956 I decided to let him off!

I'm planning on building the Sauber (which will be in Kouros decal & wheel scheme borrowed from the Revell kit) and Porsche simultaneously in what will probably be a vain attempt to make the builds quicker.

Anyone know of current replacement decals for the Rothmans 956? Mine are yellowed - they are 28 years old after all!

Is there something wrong with the Revell C9?

I e-mailed GPM about it...no reply yet. I got the Studio 27 etch set for the XJR9Lm and it was very good.

Ah excellent choices.

956 decals (Studio27) available here;

http://www.modelworks.co.uk/decals_studio27.html

(good people, modelworks, often see them at various shows)

There is also a detail CD of the 956 available from Scale Motorpsort;

http://www.hiroboy.com/catalog/product_info.php?pr...

I really must get the extra parts for my Fujimi 917K so I can start that.

Brill, thanks. Do you happen to know if all the white decals are included in the set, or is it just additional decals for Rothmans?

ETA - those decals are for the '82 car not the '83 car.

Bother. I've a feeling the 93 Works Le Mans Studio 27 decals, part no: ST27-DC767C (I think) are deleted. The picture I've seen from HLJ;

http://www.hlj.com/product/S27DC767C

does show some white decals.

There are also the '93 Rothmans Le Mans decals, ST27-DC659C

http://www.hlj.com/product/S27DC659C

as well as the 1983 WEC Works decals, S27-TK2442C;

http://www.hlj.com/product/S27SDT2442C

all of which appear tricky to track down.

I would suggest the taping the decal sheet to the window trick to sort the yellowing, but it'll only come back.

Thanks, after a quick search I think the Top Studio ST27-DC767C decals are the ones to have. Some on EBay at nearly £30, only 3x the cost of the kit! I wonder if they're yellowed too?

Looking at etch kits too, I'd like to stick with Studio 27, but Hobby Design do one that includes a DUNLOP stencil for the tyres, which would be useful since the lettering is raised on the sidewall and you're supposed to paint it (like I did on the old rear tyres in the o/p). I'd like to use decals or spray them on. I could draw the DUNLOP SP logo in Autocad and have it EDM'd out of 0.1mm steel at work, but it's a hell of a job in Autocad, and there would be some extra cuts to fill in from the EDM process.

Any thoughts on Hobby Design stuff?

I think it's one of those situations whereby there is no right answer between Studio 27 and Hobby Design, people will have their own preferences either way. I've not heard any bad things said about them, put it that way.

ETA: The ST27-DC767C decals are $18 from Stradasports;

http://www.stradasportsstore.com/studio274.html

They also do both PE sets.

Ahhh that would be good, I have a colleague who lives in St.Louis. I'm sure he'd pick the stuff up for me and bring it over next time. Thanks for that.

Also looking for the ST27 FP2412-R set for the Sauber, which they also have. Brill.

ETA Tamiya do their own set (TAM-12627) which includes belts, etch, antennea and exhaust pipes. I have the Tamiya etch kit included in the Sauber kit, and it's not fanastic TBH. If it's the right price it would be worth it for the belts and pipes alone...

Strada also do some Rothmans 'logos and crests' in 1/24, printed by Cartograf.

Thanks (I think).

I can see a stupid amount of money being spent there...

Thanks very much - just what I'm looking for.

Have you used this decal make and/or supplier before?

Cheers.

One of the others mentioned Strada Sports, I have got the Studio 27 1982 decals which I ordered from Strada Sports. I have the same kit as you and the decals were yellowed so I needed replacements, I prefer the 82 livery to the 83 one so I got them.

Anyway they have both the 82 and 83 decals. They come with the Rothmans logos aswell so no need to buy extra ones. They arent the cheapest but it could be worth it if you end up buying a fragile yellowing set of original ones. The guys pretty helpful too so drop him an email first if you want to check up on things first.

Browsing the new models at eModels, I noticed they have a 1/24 Tamiya Toyota Group C car available...

Thought it might be of interest to you.

ETA. There's a Mazda 787B too.

Thanks for that, but those were just out of my era. I think the last 1000kms race I attended was Silverstone 1987.

Christ I'm old: that's 26 years ago to the month.

Blimey, they charge like a wounded rhino!

I really struggle with the price of these Tamiya re-releases, especially the Group C / Sportscar stuff as they're not re-engineered kits (to my knowledge), so whacking a premium on them as being 'limited edition' is a touch cheeky in my view. Especially when you consider the amount of after market bits you'll want to throw at it as well.
