Afternoon All,

Right, I need to do some filming... specifically I need to film some aerial shots of the Black Country.

What I want to be able to do is strap a GoPro to a RC Helicopter and fly it into the air, stabilise the footage in post and go home again having given somebody some expenses for their trouble.

Now, I know nothing about RC models and even less about RC helicopters - could somebody (A) please tell me why this won't work and then (B) will someone else tell me that the first person was wrong and that we can go and do it next week.

Feel free to skip part (A) and move straight on to part (B).

In all seriousness, any assistance would be fab!

Cheers

I know nothing about RC flight so await a better answer but it sounds reasonable though you'll need HEAVY stabilisation. In the meantime, is there a good reason why you can't use Google satellite images etc. and animate them as necessary? From memory, you can use the Microsoft versions for commercial use as long as you acknowledge them.

Are you planning to fly it yourself? RC helis aren't the easiest things to fly, so allow for several months of practice first.

Might be better to find your local RC flying club, and get an experienced pilot to help you. A fixed wing plane will be a lot more stable than a heli.

This seems like a very expensive complex way of looking in other peoples bedroom windows!

Are you wanting to view the footage as it's being shot? Or would you be happy with someone just flying around with a camera in a fixed position?

What sort of quality do you want, or expect?

How high would the platform be going?

As someone else has alluded, heli's ain't the easiest things in the world, but there have been great advances in quadcopters, these are inherently a lot more stable so better for camera work.

Here is an example of a very small quadcopter, with a small camera attached. Ok, it's not bbc broadcast quality, but you get the idea.

I've got the quad shown, it only weighs a couple of ounces, and can lift another ounce, so is easy to fit some of the smaller lightweight cameras.

If you want to be able to manipulate the camera whilst it's in the air then you are entering a whole new (Read costly) arena smile
