As the nights draw in, my thoughts have casually drifted to my model stash. Having decided it wasn't quite big enough, I gave into temptation and bought a couple of unusual kits. One of these years I'll do a Spitfire or something, but this time round I plumped for something suitably PH-ish:

For some reason, many of the shops have the photo (and label) of "1876 Four Stroke Engine". Now, the four stroke engine itself may have been developed around this time, but this particular model is based on something which looks more like a 1930s lawn mower engine. The more "mature" modellers amongst us will remember this from Airfix's Museum Series from several decades ago. Like the beam engine kit, I had "built" one of these engines as a kid, and felt the need to do a proper job. If I find the remains of my original model in my parents' loft, I'll compare the mould quality. I have to say though, the parts look surprisingly crisp. The full retail price is £19:99, I paid £15:99 from Wonderland in Edinburgh. 20 quid is probably okay value. There are only 68 parts, but it builds up to a model which is approx 5x8 inches and quite chunky.

I don't think I will go over the top with accurising and paint effects, but I have seen one version with suitably rusty looking cylinder cooling fins and exhaust stub, which looked rather convincing.

Oh yeah. I did say two models didn't I. Oh the shame of it. Having seen several examples of this kit on the Britmodeller forum, I had been tempted for some time.

paperbag

It might possibly be a 1:24 Revell Routemaster bus.

You get a LOT of plastic for your money! The Airfix kit has 280 grammes of plastic for £20, but the Routemaster has nearly 1.7kg for (retail price) £40. I paid £35 at Wonderland, Hannants have it at £32, but more expensive postage. I suspect it will be one of those kits I look at for some time before I dare touch it.

This is how one of them has turned out http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?showt...

Revell do a set of photo-etch which costs more than the kit itself, but these people make an alternative set which is cheaper and more comprehensive. Interesting, given that they made the Revell PE set too! http://www.liaznavzdy.cz/nedtrans/pdf/ctm_eur_v03....

If you want to see just how much plastic you get for your money, see here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?showt...

The Routemaster bus is a nice kit and as you said is well worth the money, good luck with the builds.

My winter project is to finish all the unfinished projects I started last winter paperbag which include my Merlin engined Mercedes, a 1973 Skyline KPGC110, a classic Mini and an AM DBS all in 1:24 scale, plus a 1:12 Mini with a Yamaha R1 engine.

I might finish them by next winter, maybe.
