How much to build a Model MX bike for me? (I have the kit)!
Discussion
Afternoon all!
Slightly strange request, but is there anyone here that would be willing to build a kit for me? If so can you please advise on costs to build a 1987 Tamiya 1/12 KTM 250 Motocross Bike model number 14051 with Rider? It was a kit that was given to my Dad in 1990 and he never got anywhere with it and it was left in its box. I somehow ended up with it at my house and have just found it in the loft as we prepare to move house.
I'm 99% sure all bits are there and it looks in good condition but I don't have anywhere near the skills needed to complete it to a reasonable standard but would love to see the look on his face if I presented it to him fully built!
The kit was bought for him after he had to give up Motocross and sell his beloved KTM thanks to us kids so it was a bit of fun but he never got time to do it and I'm sure he's forgotten all about it!
The kit is this one:

Please email me / PM if you prefer info@detailmycar.co.uk and I'd love to get this arranged!
Thanks again

Two things concern me with this, 1) getting the (old and rare) kit to the builder in one piece 2) getting the finished model back to you in one piece (the most important thing). To be honest, modelling isn't easy but also isn't the most difficult thing to pick up, and based on your email address I'd say you have a fair idea of what would go into building it anyway.
Handing over the model to your dad having made it yourself would blow his mind as well, regardless of the finish.
I wouldn't mind having a go, but struggle to finish my own projects so I couldn't say how long it would take and I've never built a bike either.

I'm with BFF. I did a Tamiya GP bike in the 80s and they really are a peace of cake to build. Something like that you'd be better doing yourself. The only bit that may be tricky would be ensuring decent paint finish, but I'm pretty sure that the MX bikes were coloured plastic and the graphics were decals like the real bikes.
Seriously, do it yourself they really aren't very complicated, and as BFF said, knowing you built it will mean more.
